Yesterday, a LGS took in a K98 for consignment that appears to be a non-import veteran bring back. It’s a byf 44 (Mauser 1944) with a g series serial number (July). The bore is mint, and the receiver, bolt body, bolt sleeve, and floor plate match serial numbers (not electropencil) The lower barrel band and safety have different numbers. There are no marking on the butt plate, and the laminated stock has a different number stamped on the side near the butt, unsure on what is stamped in the barrel channel or on the hand guard. The cleaning rod is missing.

What would one of these go for in today’s market?

Thanks,

Hunter

I'd figure maybe between 4 and 5.

Curious about the stock numbers you mention (on a non-import).
Is it a serial number in the wood or a rack number on the stock disc like the Hilfspolizei or Kriegsmarine (some)?
Maybe they'll let you yard it apart?

Quite a few straight 98ks here and I've never seen or even heard of a war 2 98k
with a serial no. on the side of the butt other than RCs of course.
Always willing to learn though.
Remember that a large percentage of 'bringbacks' were actually just pre-68 imports.
Some were marked with a 'Germany' stamp on the rear sight base, but not all by any means.

Maybe share pictures if you pick it up.

My guess without pics, JT

Thanks for the info!

The butt stock number is odd. It is stamped with very thin letters. I did not really see anything like it on a Google image search.

The rifle would probably be an outstanding shooter (assuming safety check is OK), but the price they are asking appears to be for a much higher grade of K98.
