Today I was given a Russian-captured Mauser K98 rifle. The inscription on the receiver ring reads, "S/42G". It has a laminated stock which is covered in a poorly applied coat of shellac. The trigger guard and the barrel band are of stamped manufacture. The front sight has no provision for a hood. The bolt does not match the serial number on the receiver, but the barrel and receiver numbers do match. The bore although a little dark, still has very strong rifling. I would really appreciate any information from those of you who are more knowledgeable on Mauser rifles, about what I acctually have. I am intrested in knowing about its value and if it would hurt the value if I refinished the laminated wood stock. Thanks for your help and time. Merry Christmas to all!
