Looking for .22LR history!

I'm looking for a bit more history on the .22LR round.

I have heard it was designed for 100 yards shooting initially.. Any info is greatly appreciated. Very interested in possibly it's predicessor, and who commissioned it etc..

Info is kind of sparse and contradictory, but it came out around 1887, apparently as a project between Stevens and Peters. Stevens made the guns, Peters made the cartridges.

According to Cartridges of the World, it was offered in the 1888 Stevens catalog in their 1, 2, 9 and 10 break open rifles, along with the New Model, or Bicycle, rifle.

It may have been developed for target shooting, but it's more likely that it was developed as a more powerful round, using a 5-gr. charge of black powder (same as the older .22 Long), but a 40-grain bullet, 11 grains heavier than the bullet in the Long.

So the info is in fact contradictory? I read a few things that confused me a little bit, and so I thought I'd ask.

Do you know what the original intent of the round was? Wild game (rabbit) etc??

It seems to me to be a perfect "pellet" replacement..

Well, I really think that the intent is pretty clear -- a more powerful .22. Possibly for better killing power on small game, possibly not.

hmmm

that is weird. i don't know what you mean by "taps" but i guess you mean the post at 6:01 anf then again at 7:38. don't know why that happened. i posted the earlier one while at work, and then got home and had an email from the board that there was a reply to my post. i clicked on the link to read the reply, and then closed the link. strange, but no, i didn't copy and paste the same message i had posted earlier.
