Looking for a decent 3x9x30mm or up to 40mm for a new semi-auto in .308 - I am not really interested in ranges beyond 250/300 max.

Would also like to stay in $200 range or less.

Burris, Vortex diamondback, Nikon, or Leupold vx1. You can often find one of them on sale for $170 or so.

Great news, at that price point there are several excellent choices. There isn't anything much under $200 I'd recommend and anything much over $400 is more scope than most people will ever need. The $200-$300 price range is the sweet spot.

My choices, in order of preference.

http://swfa.com/Redfield-3-9x40-Revolution-Rifle-Scope-P44468.aspx

All 3 of these are very comparable. I give the Burris top billing mostly because it comes with long range dots at $199. The other 2 have the option, but it will cost $10-$50 over your $200 budget.

Very hard to find a good scope under $200, but they do exist.

You will not find a better scope for the money than this deal:

Go to Minox Rifle Scope and look at the 3 x 9 x 40 demo unit for $139.00.

Redfield Revolution

Hands down best scope under $200 Redfield revolution 3-9X40

Good in dim light and bright light; reliable, easy to set. Simple, durable.
It is clearer than Vortex Viper.

Just put a Vortex Diamondback on my Ruger 308. $160.00 @ Amazon. Clear optics and lightweight. Only a dozen or so rounds thru it so far but a good scope for the price.

I have a Burris ff e1, vortex crossfire ii, vx-1, bushnell elite 3200, weaver grand slam, redfield revenge, Nikon buckmaster, and a bushnell xlt.

All of these were purchased new and under $200, most on sale.
All of them are serviceable or at least have been so far.

The fullfield e1, vx-1, and bushnell elite 3200 are my favorites. The vx-1 has the best eye relief and they stand behind their products . I have heard some horror stories about Burris customer service.

The Nikon and bushnell xlt are my least but they also each cost less than $100. The redfield revenge is mediocre compared to the rest.

I will say from my limited experience to skip the cheap bushnells, Simmons, tasco, and utg.

Forgot to add: I purchased the weaver on a whim recently because it was on sale. It will be mounted on another Howa 1500 I have coming in. So even though the clarity and definition seems good on it I can't honestly compare it with anything fairly. It has made in Japan stamped on it though which is a good sign I suppose.

Leupold VX1. The 3-9X40 is $199 everywhere.

US made, lifetime warranty, good optics, known good quality.
Will

Just curious if you made a choice / decision yet. I just got a Minox 66006 ZV 3 Rifle Scope on eBay for $105, seems very clear. It is a 3-9. I got it to replace a 1-4 on one of my AR's. The scope seems to go for ~$180 on Amazon. I have it mounted but have not had a chance to start zeroing it yet.

Get a Redfield Revolution

If u really want 2 stay at $200 BEST DEAL by FAR is a Redfield Revolution 3-9-40
Under $200.

Or go to eurooptics and get their steal of a deal on a Vortex PST 4-16X 50 for $500. Steal! But Redfiled BEST for $200.

I have not decided yet on a scope. It's just too dam hot to go out shooting and zeroing in a scope, so I am still looking.

I like the idea of the Redfield. I had one many years ago, on a Vanguard 30-06 and it was a great scope. Redfield had some problems over the years, but I understand that they're back again, with some really good scopes. I'll need to look at them as well.

Redfield made some great scopes in the 70's. I had one on my small bore target rifle and it was great at 100 yards.

Look at the Leupuld Vx-1. I have only used their Vx-2 but it is still supposed to be a real good scope. The 3x9 is $200 from Optics Planet where you can also get a 5% THR discount. Then on top of that Leupold just announced a $50 back rebate on all VX-1 scopes. That means you could get the Leupold VX-1 3x9 for $140 shipped. I don't think you can get a better scope for that price.

Redfield Revolution are made in the same plant as Leupold. They are great scopes for the money. There is a $50 rebate on VX1 scopes right now. One of those two.

The VX1 has better coatings than the Redfield. The Redfield has better coatings than the Rifleman.
Right now, the VX1 costs less than the Redfield or the Rifleman.

I have not spoken with my son about the scope issue for a couple of weeks now, but I am petty sure that he has decided to go with the VX1. I'll follow up with that.
