Would like to find a 20 gauge with at least 6 rd capicity in a youth/compact size. Anyone know if Rem or Mossy is making such an animal?

Model 500 Super Bantam All Purpose Field is what I'm thinking after doing some searching...but I'd like to add a mag extension and am having a problem finding one.

The Mossberg 20ga guns are limited to 6 total rounds,(5+1) and you can not install an extension because of the way the barrels are held on at the end of the magazine tube. Would be nice if Mossberg would make an 8 shot special purpose in 20ga. like they do in 12ga. , but they don't.

The Remington 870 is available in youth models and magazine tube extensions are available for them.

Thanks guys been reading up on this, I've found the answer about the extension, thanks mnrivrat. Okay looks like the options are the Rem tac with knox adjustable and the 500 bantam as far as off the shelf. I'll show the lady the site with the builds, Ed. My 12 gauge 870 is just a bit too much stock for her so we were looking at youth models and she'd like something with a bit less bite.

My advise is get wood furniture so you can cut it down to any length of pull. I got my wife a mossberg 500 in 20 ga with a 26" barrel and 3 chokes. Then I order an 18.5" HD barrel direct from mossberg for $70. So if you get the shotgun from Walmart & add a barrel you could have a good skeet, hunting, & HD gun for like $300. They even have sidesaddles in 20 ga from Tacstar.

The 870 "Youth" has a 21" barrel and a 13" LOP. The 870 "Junior" has a 18.5" barrel and a 12" LOP (plus/minus a fraction, going from memory). Both are 20 gauges. Wal-Mart will typically have the Youth in stock. Gander Mountain carries both. Either will accept 2 or 3 rd mag extension from Chote or Tac-Star. On a Reminton it's an easy to install $30 part.

She went with the 870 Youth in 20 all wood furniture, has the rem choke. I let her handle about every thing I could find including everything I had. She liked the balance and feel of the 870. Picked up 50 rds of #3 buck and going to take her out and get a feel for it before its set for house duty.

Do consider picking up a box or two of low base rabbit loads to start out with. Particularly if she is not used to shooting shotguns.

That may be a bad idea (IMO) 20ga. can recoil as much as a 12 ga. because they are lighter. I'd recommend a .410, but that's just me.
(ammo for either is hard to find in buckshot)

The size format is easier for many to manage though, a 12 gauge launcher is comparatively as unwieldy for many women as a 10 gauge would be for many men.

It is about payload - if you don't try to make a 20ga deliver what a 12ga. does for payload , then you will not have a recoil problem .

#3 Buckshot in 2&3/4 inch 20ga. delivers about the same energy as two .357 Magnums. That is good enough for most. Starting out with lighter loads is just a good idea for a new shooter. It is also cheaper .

I know this post is about dead but thought I would update it just to keep everyone in the know. The gun now has a hair over 800 rds through it, no malfunctions and she likes it (the important part) She was not new to shooting, she had handled rifles before and several handguns. She also gave it the ole college try to handle my express 7 shot, it was too big for her. She is 5'0 and about 110 lbs. The youth model gets a gold star this time around. It works, she can operate it reliably, and I wouldn't want to be the dark figure at the bottom of the steps when she steps out of her room with it.
