I'm looking to get a 'fun' rifle to play with at the range and just general shooting. I am leaning towards a. 308 but not completely against other calibers. Who can recommend a good heavy barrel .308 in the $500-600 range? I am probably going to want to shoot some long distance with it as well, and put a vortex high magnification optic to boot.....i'm all ears fellas, and thanks for any valuable input.

Check out the various Remington 700 models, also Savage makes some good accurate rifles at a reasonable price.

You haven't mentioned what distance you'll be shooting at and if you want to only punch paper targets with it (which is fine)

It could be a challenge to find a HB 308 in your price range today. But, you might also consider a lighter contour hunting type barrel rifle. You can find those new from Savage in 308. And don't overlook the used racks.

.308, Savage model 10T Tactical, heavy barrel, 5R rifling, Detahable box magazine, $599"

Wow -- that's quite a deal if it shoots like other Savages.

I've got several Savage rifles and they're all excellent. My tactical rifles are Remington 700s, but if I was a guy just starting out I'd definitely check out that Savage 10T.

OP - there's your rifle ;)

thanks guys. i appreciate the feedback. that savage is definitely worth looking into. i hear savage has really stepped their game up in recent years....good reviews on youtube as well

After owning a Savage I'm a huge fan as well. It's what I'd go with in that price range. I'd pick one over a Remington 700 in a heartbeat.

Wow, Savage seems to be really winning some folks over!! I do have a Rem. 700 in 300 Win mag, that is my hunting rifle. I'm wanting to put something together just for target shooting. As far as range goes, I'm not much of long distance but want to work my way into it gently. There's no clubs or ranges for that particularly in my area where i live. So, i'll kind of be on my own unless i feel like driving a couple of hours. This savage in the previous mentioned replies, is that a short special run or a regular production rifle for Savage? Thanks for the help guys.....
