I am looking for a polymer 45 ACP. I looked at the XD with the longer barrel (Tactical 5" I believe) and the Glock 21. The 21 was not too big for me, but the grip was weird. I see that Glock came out with a SF model. Worth looking at? Better than the old 21? The XD felt fine, but the trigger seemed sloppy to me. Of the two which do you all recommend? Is there an affordable polymer out there that is reliable that you would suggest I look at other than these? All information will be a great help. Thanks!!!

Try and find a gun range that will let you shoot a variety of 45acp handguns. We have one out here in Utah that rented me as many handguns that I wanted to shoot for $10 + ammo. I shot about 5 or 6 - didn't buy any of them - but liked them all :D I did buy a Taurus PT145

Good luck!

The XD is a great gun. The Glock 21 is a great gun. You are defiinitely in a dilemma. Why not get both? Or buy the Glock 21 first because is has abundant parts and there is not much need for a gunsmith. In fact, most of the parts are do it yourself. After you've enjoyed the G21, then buy the XD. Both guns are reliable and priced just right.

get the XD45 Compact, 4" barrel with a shortened grip that comes with both a 10 rd and 13 rd magazine. i love mine, just need to get more free time so i can go shoot it.

www.xdtalk.com for XD forums, some good info there.

If you don't mind an 8 round single stack take a look at the Ruger P345. Got one a couple weeks ago and couldn't be happier. Grip is slim and the angle is nice.

I've got a poll going and asking the same question. Leaning towards either a Glock 21SF or a Glock 30. But, keeping my options open.

I have a Glock 20 10mm (same size as the 21) and I love it. It's not tiny, but it fits my medium sized hand well. Fine guns.
There are a lot of good 45's out there, Sig 220, 1911, USP, etc.. but don't overlook the Ruger 45 autos. They are very good guns: reliable, built like a tank, accurate, and did I mention reliable??;)

The S&W M&P's look nice too, but I have yet to shoot one.

How is the DAO trigger to get used to? I haven't found a DA I have liked yet. But I do like the feel of the M&P's. The DA trigger felt mushy in the store but perceptions at the range are what I am looking for.
I only dry fired it, but it was un-noteworthy. It's wasn't as nice as the S&W revolvers, but it was very useable.

All the guns mentioned are great guns. I have owned the XD45, own an MP9 (wife's gun) and currently carry a G21SF as my CCW. The difference between the G21 and G21SF were like night and day for me. I could not believe that such a "little" change to the backstrap could have such a huge impact on how the gun feels. Normally I am a Glock ergonomics basher galore, but the 21SF fits me very well and feels good. The MP45 that I have handled felt awesome, I think the MP line is by far the most ergonomic of all the guns I have shot/owned. To add to your confusion, if you can hold off for a little while you can also ponder the HK45 if you have the cash to burn.

I would seriously beg, borrow, or rent each one you are considering before making the final decision.

My 14 year old Sig 220 hasn't had one problem in the 2 years I've owned it. SA trigger still breaks like glass, zero creep. I recently used it at a SD class and I'm still impressed.

Glock 21
Sig 220
M&P 45
1911A1 (Pick one of dozens)

These are all great .45s

My favorite to date is the H&K USP line.

Re: M&P triggers - most are pretty bland out of the box, but they shoot in *very* nicely, and respond to a light polish job on the firing pin block even better. I now prefer a broken in M&P trigger to a Glock trigger.

I think that my Ruger 345 is the best value on the market right now -- especially if Trigicon sights (available from Ruger.com) are added. The grip is fabulous and it has a wonderful balance of size, mass and handling. I believe that the best ever .45 is the H&K P9S but availability and price considerations make acquisiiton tough. Enjoy your "hunt"! :D
