My dad has an XD40 Service and finds it too big to carry (I agree). He wants something smaller and easier for his carry pistol. I have a Glock 19 which he also finds too big. He won't want to spend the $ on Sigs or HK's. What are his options.

If he likes the service size XD I would suggest the XD subcomp; The ergonomics are virtually the same. This would keep your dad from having to "learn" a completely different platform.

Kahr CW9 hands down.

Smaller in length, width, weight and height compared to the XD SC. Its smaller in legth, width and weight compared to the G26. They will cost almost $200 less and have very smooth triggers. Mine was $380 NIB and hasnt malfunctioned in almost 1000 rounds so far. I carry it every day as it weights ~16 ounces unloaded. Awesome, awesome piece. Very accurate for the length of the barrel too.

The slimness of the Kahr makes it oh so easy to carry. Depending on how much weight is a factor I'd also consider the K9, P9 and TP9 (1/2 inch longer barrel). Compared to the double stacks these are much more comfortable to carry. If money is really tight then maybe the CW9 as already mentioned.

I really like my Kahr PM9, and if I'm to lightly dressed to carry that, its the Kel-Tec P3AT. Thats my choice FWIW, LM.

What kind of reliability can be expected from Kahr. Can it be compared to the glock or xd?

Jocko, a member here has around/over 15,000 rounds(IIRC) through his Kahr P9(IIRC). Like all firearms, there are a few lemons and the CW's had some early problems with their polymer frames. But, they have since fixed that and they are a very hot item among alot of LEO's as a back up sidearm. The metal framed Kahrs seem to be more durable, but the polymer ones are nothing to shake a stick at. Ive shot an unreliable XD SC before. The magazine kept falling out(wasnt my thumb) and i had 4 stove pipes in only 50 rounds. The Glocks, to me, dont point right. I have small hands and i couldnt get my pinky on the grip on the XD SC and G26, unless i used their extended mags, which just hurt its concealability that much more IMO. The CW9 doesnt have that problem.

For me, the CW9 is the best option out there. It fits nice, has very little imprint and i can conceal it very well with just shorts and a tshirt. It points like a dream too.

IMO, the CW40 is a bit much. Most of the problems the Kahr's had were with the models chambered in 40S&W. The recoil is quite intense on a 16oz firearm. Kicks similar to a snub nose 357 using medium powered loads. I rented the CW40 first(it performed perfectl and was a range rental), but didnt like the recoil so i went with the CW9.

Have your father try both the 9 and the 40 before committing. I have a Taurus PT140 Mil Pro that has a bit of a muzzle flip to it. With much concentration, I can tame it with two hands but I sometimes wonder how effective I'll be in a defensive situation with one hand occuppied and the other trying to hit a moving target that's shooting back. Yes, the magazine bite is there due to the gap from the magazine floorplate, but it's not serious and doesn't break skin or cause bruising.

It's not a fun range gun after 100 rounds but so far I'm confident it'll get the job done. YMMV. My hands are on the medium small side plus I'm a small guy.

Sub compact Glocks like 26 or 27 are perfect for CW and are around $500..
Kahrs are nice and slim but have a horrible trigger pull IMHO.
