Have been trying to find a good way of carrying .30-30 ammo without using a cartridge belt or butt cuff. And please do not say the box it came in I am trying to find something less bulky.
Has anyone tried anything along the lines of a mosin or sks stripper clip? Any ideas or solutions people have come up with would be appreciated.

Lots of 20 round boxes have 2 ten round plastic "holders" that you can easily fit into a pocket. Lots easier to use than a stripper that doesn't fit the rifle. You could also cut the piece into 2 five round holders.

Yeah, and most of those 10 rnd. plastic holders have slits that you can pass your belt through. So you could wear 10 rounds on your hip easy enough.

Get with the program.

go to an Army surplus store and pick a LBE. It's a pistol belt with suspenders and on the pistol belt there are pouches for magazines that would work great for loose ammo. You could also get a LBV (load bearing vest) but they would be harder to find in a surplus store

I just re-read your post and saw that you didn't want a cartridge belt. The LBE would be fairly similar to a belt, but a LBV would fit very nice and not be bulky, it's what I use to carry ammo when I am hunting

Though I know that this is not what you want to hear but I think that a cartridge belt makes the most sense. I used to think that the darn things are pretty silly. However the more I think about it the more sense they make. It sure beats fishing around in a pocket for extra ammo if you need it, or your daypack if you use one.

A good hunter shouldn't need to carry more ammo than his rifle will hold, unless it's a single-shot.

At one time ammo wallets were available for most popular calibers.
yep
sure miss mine, dunno why they got so less popular, hardly ever see 'em anymore
mine was a cordura/elastic thing, fold over wallet style, held 12 rounds, on belt as a slider, or in pocket, or wherever
one of the grandsons has it (?), somewhere (??), probably with 12 rounds of 30-30 still in it, because I never did need to pull any out of of it whist wearin' it in the woods

true, 12 extra rounds is a mite thin these days, though, a feller really needs 30 or 40 30-rd loaded mags for huntin' large goats with white tails
(but mine was at least black... mebbe I was just slightly ahead of my time ?)

I usually carry three in the gun, six on a stock pouch, and ten in my back pack. I've never shot more than two deer a day and then lots more times just one. If I'm carrying a rifle for purposes other than hunting then I'll get one of my ARs or something else specifically made for situations like that.
