I'm going to be celebrating getting my undergrad degree in a bit and want to get a nice .45 before I go on to dental school. I like 1911's, but would prefer something with a capacity of 12 or more rounds. What are my options?

Non-1911 options:

Glock, 13 + 1

XD and XD-m, 13 + 1

S&W M&P is 14 + 1 with extended magazine (10 + 1 with flush mag)

Fullsize 1911 options:

Para Ordnance, several variations. 14 up to 18 + 1 (with after market base pad)

STI 2011, 12 or 14 + 1, depending on magazine.

There are others, but I'm comfortable recommending any of these.

+1 on the Para Ordnance P14-45. I have one with the LDA trigger. I own about 8-9 1911 style handguns, and the Para is one of my favorites. It sports the 5" barrel and is standard 1911 Gov't size, but just has a bigger girth to the grip to allow for the double stack mags. I really like the higher capacity (14 rds) and definitely like the LDA concept. It shoots like a dream and never hiccups.

I also have a pair of Para P12-45s. As the model name indicates, they are 12-round capacity. They have a 3.5" barrel (if I recall correctly), but both have the traditional single action trigger mechanism. I'd like to pick up the P12-45 in the LDA trigger too, but just haven't found the right deal....yet!! :)

If you like 1911s and you have a fair amount of money to spend, look at 2011s. You have two choices:

STI - Very nice. Around $2k to $2.5k for something not set up for dedicated competition.

SVI - Insanely nice. I'd go so far to say better than any of the semi-custom 1911 builders. $3.5k to $4.5k for something not set up for dedicated competition, but the sky's the limit really. They can make you a gun where everything but the barrel is made of titanium. Those run over 10k.

Fnp. Terrifically accurate, built well and reliable as a rock. 15 + 1 capacity. 16+1 with the Arredondo mag base for the cz.

I bought one about a year ago and it's my favorite gun. I carry it most days in a crossbreed supertuck.

If you like the 1911 ergonomics, definitely try out the FNP USG model. It's hammer fired, unlike so many of the popular polymer pistols and the USG model has the frame-mounted safety/decocker so that it can be carried cocked and locked like a 1911 if you so choose. Otherwise, just decock it and carry in DA mode, safety off and ready to go.

I had a Para 14 through here a few months ago as a consignment sale, it was really nice. If I was looking for a hi-cap .45 auto, it would for sure go on my short list.

High Cap .45

+1

For the FN.

I would also suggest looking at the CZ 97. The are a little harder to find, but the accuracy is outstanding. I like to have some firearms that I wouldn't see very often at the range. The CZ 97 is still one of the better quality vs price .45's out there.

The Jericho versions are great shooters also. Specifically the triggers are amazing out of the box. They are a little on the heavy side, but you get a softer recoil with the heavier weight. Congrats on finishing your undergrad, and good luck with dentistry school.

Either the STI or Para Ordnance widebodies will fit your needs. I shoot botha PO14-45 Signature, PO16-40 Limited and PO18-9 LDA Limited - all have been reliable and accurate.

I have an Ed Brown Kobra Carry, Kimber Ultra CDP II, and a XDM 45 with a Powder River Trigger kit. If I could keep only one gun, the XDM would stay. Accurate, safe, and with the trigger kit it is a great all purpose pistol.

If you want extreme capacity the .45 glocks can use Kriss 30 round magazines. 30 rounds of .45 is pretty friggin sweet.

Of course their use would be rather limited...
