Hello. I am looking for a new rifle. I have a .17 HMR and a .300 win mag and above, but I am looking for something to bridge the gap that is not too expensive to buy or shoot. I want some advice on what to look at and advice on something fun to shoot at the range and possibly hunt some deer. I have access to a .243 so please leave that one out. Thanks for your help!!

Milsurp! Maybe a Mosin or five? :D

There's also the K31, a ton of different Mausers, lots of others I'm having trouble thinking of at the moment. None of them are very expensive, and neither is their ammo. In most cases, anyway.

Remington 7600 in 270win. Bridging the gap between bolt action and semi-auto and 243 and 300 win mag. A true middle of the road choice! Relatively inexpensive if you can find a used model.

.223/ 5.56 Nato, maybe the cheapest centerfire to shoot and will fit right in between .17 hmr and .300 WIN MAG. You can have rifles in .223/5.56 nato from a mossberg for $249 to an AR for $650 on up. Plus ever other price over that and in between.

.308 comes to mind for me.

First thing that popped in my mind as well. I would either go with a Savage 10 or Tikka T3, best bang for your buck as far as I'm concerned.

Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 about $300 and a Redfield 3x9x40 for another $200 and you got a tackdriving rifle, you can replace the ugly stock for less than $100 too or just sand it and paint it. the 7mm-08 is an amazing caliber will do a lot with little recoil. (also good choices are .308, 6.5 x 55, 7x 57) wont recoil like the 300 win mag.

I'd have to agree with the other posters, it sounds like you need something in the .308/270/30-06 range. The Ruger American Rifle seems to be a screaming deal right now, low $300's with great reviews and excellent accuracy. They are also really light, which can be a pro and a con, although the reports I've read seem to suggest that Ruger's recoil pad works pretty well.

Tikka's are also an excellent rifle, but a new one will probably run you $200 over the Ruger. Howa's can be had for just a little above the Ruger from places like CDNN, and are by all accounts a solid rifle. Vanguards, and Vanguard S2's (also made by Howa) would also be good options. I'm not a huge fan of Savages, but there is no denying that Savage makes an accurate, high quality rifle for a great price.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the brands mentioned above, but the Ruger just seems like a great value currently.
