Hello everyone long time lurker, first time poster here. I am looking for some advice on a new rifle. I currently own a Browning Micro Hunter in 7mm-08 and I absolutely love it! I am looking to add a little longer range rifle into the mix for deer and possibly something larger(way on down the road). My shots could be as far as my eyes can see for deer. I have considered a 300 WSM, 300 Win Mag, and a 7mm Rem Mag. I am open to any input as far as cartridge and rifle goes. I want a nice rifle but doesn't have to be extravagant. I really love the Browning A-Bolt but it seems to have the most perceived recoil with me, maybe it just doesn't fit quite right. I have considered Savage, Remington, Tikka, Browning, Winchester, and Ruger. What do y'all think is the most for the money trying to stay around $500.00 or lower. Thanks in advance for all input.

I'd go savage as well, but I would go with the 7mm rem mag. If you are a reloader, you can share bullets between the 7mag and the 7mm-08. The 308 just dosent give anymore over the 7mm-08 in my opinion to justify a new rifle platform. The 300wsm and 300 win mag are also great choices. All of these cartridges are common enough to be found at the local wal-mart, and all will down a deer at 500 yards and beyond. (As long as the shooter is capable) I like the savage platform over the others cause I can change the caliber myself with just a barrel change. But that's just me. Some don't care about this issue. As stated earlier, that's what I would do, but hey you asked for our opinions so get ready for a slue.. Keep us posted as to what you decide. Just remmember, use this info to make an educated descision, but in the end, buy the rifle YOU want. Not what anyone else wants. This way you will never live with the "what if" factor. Have a Merry Christmas, Brian.

I would look at the 25-06 over the magnums, but the 7mm Rem. Mag has appeal as well. The 270WSM is also worth a look.

Thanks for the quick reply's so far. I did have a Winchester Ultimate Shadow in 270 WSM and sold it. I'm still kicking myself in the rear for that one. I thought about another one, but thought I would like to try something different. It is an awesome round though, I took a doe with it at 274 yards in Eastern NC a few years ago, she never took another step. I'm not opposed to getting another 270 WSM but after I got it I wished I had gotten the 300 WSM.

Well I may not be in the market as soon as I thought. My dad gave me his LH Browning Stainless Stalker in 270 Win. He just told me to take it cause he has no desire to hunt anymore, he'd rather be on the lake getting a line wet. Although it is lefthanded I think it will work, I've seen plenty of lefty's shooting right handed guns.

Would your Dad consider adopting an old burnt out paratrooper? :)

He sounds like a good man. Left or right handed,..cherish that rifle. Btw,..I shoot right hand actions southpaw. It takes a bit of getting used to,..but it works for me. I do not even own a left handed gun,...nor do I really want to.

The rage for the big magnums is "much ado about nothing" as shakespeare said. My grandfather always said "Don't over caliber, you ruin to much good meat." The mag. rounds are 3 to 4 times the cost of either 30-30 or 30-06. A 30-06 ( my favorite) will allow you to hunt any thing on this continent!!!! The money saved on ammo will allow you to buy lunch if you miss!! Did it ever occur to you that the guys on TV pushing the mags. get a lot of sponser money and perks....

The new Savage "Edge". I heard on Dave Petzal on the television last night say that they are going for around $320 retail. He was shooting sub-MOA to MOA, right out of the box. I don't remember what type of scope came with it, but it looked very functional. It would be worth checking out. I would look at calibers in .270 Win or 30.06.

How much larger than deer? Will it get angry and kill you?

Your 7-08 is a great cartridge; the next step up, IMO, is the .338 WM, and up from there. If the 7-08 won't do it, a few grains more bullet weight, 300 fps more velocity, and/or .02" bullet diameter isn't going to make a significant difference in capability.

Long range deer rifle. One word for you "Tikka" Hands down best rifle I have ever shot, I still love my savages but they do not hold a candle to my baby. Refinment is as good as you are used to on your Browning, accuracy is as good if not better then anything else in the lightweight sporter class. Caliber choice depends on how long ranged and how big of a deer. You cannot go wrong with a 270 WSM no how big or how far the deer are, it is 7mm rem mag power/trajectory in a lighter recoiling short action cartrage, I made the switch a few months ago and have never looked back.
