My first hunting knife ever was a Western hunting knife with the stacked leather rings for the handle. I still have it, and carry it on my belt nearly every time I'm in the field. While its not the knife I use when gutting and skinning (I flipflop between a custom Nick Allen hunter and a Kershaw blade trader) I still get alot of use out of it, and it never failed me. Last year at deer camp one of the older hunters gave me several other Western knives that were his or his fathers - some of these date from the 50s according to him. All were well used, but with one exception (a hunter that was sharpened with a bench grinder) all are in decent shape and have years of use left in them. A good soak in WD-40 seemed to have revitalized the leather handles, and all the blades, while being very discolored, cleaned and sharpened up nicely.

2 of the knives were from a Western combo set - one with a hunter/bowie type blade profile and the other with a small trout and bird profile. I would like to give this set to my nephew, who just turned 11 and passed his Hunter Safety exam. Many months of ebay have proved fruitless in my search for a sheath for this set. Any ideas on where to get a sheath?

Thanks in advance.

Piggy Back

I have seen a number of big/small knife sets where the sheath has the smaller one piggy backed onto the larger one.

I have such a set myself, made in Finland.

I don't know if you'll see what you're looking for there, but examples of the genre can be seen on Ragnar's Forge (www.ragweedforge.com) especially used with Puukko/Leuku sets.

I know he does sell some of the sheaths separately, but I haven't personally shopped for one of those.

I've also seen some in other patterns and makers, but I can't recall where at the moment.

Find a western saddle shop. They can probably make one for you. You could even get his initials added to it. I've seen them made in both a "stacked" style and "side by side".
