Have 2 1911's that put em where I aim em so if ya enjoy the platform sure, why not.
Then there's the SAA convertible .45 (LC and ACP) cylinders that is kinda fun
But....the S&W 15 in .38...well she's just a classic :D

Factor in a S&W 686 or 66 that'll shoot the intended .357 but can take a steady diet of .38 and well...ya have the best of both worlds so why limit yourself? ;)

I have two 45 ACP revolvers. One for target work and the other for carry. Both are S&W. Never shot a 38 Super or a 1911 so I can't offer any comments on those.

Most of the 9mm or 45ACP carbines I have handled have been too heavy for the cartridge and did not provide any significant gain in accuracy or ballistics to warrent keeping them.

So, of your choices, I would recommend a good DA revolver for the 45 ACP. Finding one may not be as cheap as some other choices.

My best shooter is a 9mm 1911 STI Trojan, cheap to feed too. 38 Super is nice but... it has no real advantage over 9mm or 9mm+P IMO.

I have 11 handguns, 2 of which are 1911's. For just plain ol' good time fun, I enjoy my 625 the most.

Of course, I reload .45 so ammo cost isn't a big factor.

Good luck!

Marlin used to make a "Camp Carbine" in both 9mm and 45acp calibers

You can easily find them in Pawn Shops right now (at least around here)

:)

I'd pick the .45 carbine, because it's different. I'd like to see the .45 pick up some speed and maybe even break the sound barrier with a longer barrel :)

As a matter of "all purpose, pick only one", i'd go with the 1911.

I have one 1911 and really like shooting it. I also have a Beretta CX4 45 carbine and a High Point 9mm Carbine that are also fun to shoot also.

.38Super? The guys around here all moan about how much the brass costs and how hard it is to get. No thanks. An interesting round but not worth the hassles of chasing the brass. But a suitable alternative would be the now popular 9mm "Major" loads used in some IPSC guns if a gun was tuned for this power. I'm guessing that it's pretty much the same as the 9mm +P I'm seeing references about all over the place.

Can't go wrong with a .45acp 1911. A classic.

DA .45acp revolver with moon clips? Excuse me while I get my drool cloth :D Someday soon.... some day....

9mm or .45acp carbine? Well techincally you just went over the line to a rifle. But having said that out of the three 9mm carbines I've shot I was super impressed with the JR carbine by EMF. It has some "life" to it courtesy of the plain blowback operation and felt really nice while clutched in the firing position. Some fiddling would need to be done to make a blowback shield or tune the spring to avoid the blow back gases puffing into the shooter's eyes but overall it's a very nice carbine. Others I've shot are the Beretta Storm an H&K carbine that I can't seem to find a picture of at the moment... at least I remember it as being an H&K. In any event most small pistol caliber carbines are rather mild in recoil. And that leaves me feeling that I've been cheated in some way. But then I don't have a competitive match event to use them in. If I did that may change my mind.

Assuming the size of the gun isn't an issue, 9mm carbine. It is fun to never miss, right?

Long guns are just inherently more stable. Longer sight radius helps. (or a scope of some kind) The round, out of a pistol is good to 50 yards. Out of a carbine, probably 100 yards.

Not 100% sure of the velocity gains, but I'll bet it is at least 200 fps faster out of the carbine.

45 ACP would also be fun, but it is a pretty slow round, so there's not as much advantage to it out of a carbine as a 9mm, IMO. The ammo's also cheap enough to shoot some quantity, even if you don't hand-load your ammo.

What guns are you thinking of, carbine-wise?

Ruger made some a few years back. Marlin too. Beretta still makes theirs. Kel-Tec seems to be the most popular one now. (Sub2000) I'd like one of those, but I'm not going to get raked over the coals for it either. ;)

I just bought myself a nice 44 Magnum carbine, a Marlin 1894 lever action. Should be a really fun shooter.

I do not shoot any carbine. In revolvers and semi auto pistols the 9mm's are fun to shoot with factory loads. I shoot my 45ACP revolvers and semi autos with lightened loads for both bullseye pistol and the other pistol games.
