I picked up my Spartan (Remington Baikal import) for $299 a bit over a year and a half ago. It's a nice little shotgun, not particularly ornate, but it sure gets the job done. I shot a lot of game with it last season. I love that thing. It came with 5 chokes. Mine's the hammerless model, but there are hammer guns available in the Spartan.

Looking for an inexpensive but reliable Coach Gun.

Any Ideas, I'd like to stay in the $250 to $300 range.

If you don't care about the brand and want external hammers...SOG and CAI sells them for about $250.00+/-. I bought one (about 1 yr ago w/external hammers) and it is dependable and fun to shoot.

I think your best options, IMO, are the Remington Spartan 220 with double triggers, hardwood stock, cyl/cyl fixed chokes for around 300 or a little more, or one of the basic Stoeger coachguns with double triggers and fixed IC/Mod chokes for probably a similar amount. Single triggers and/or choke tubes are going to run you a bit more than 300 and external functioning hammers on a decent gun are going to run more yet.

There may be an exception, though. The distributor "Zanders" was running a sale on a Spartan that is not currently cataloged, Model 89554, which is a hammerless 12 ga. coach gun with walnut stocks, blued receiver, a butt-plate (no recoil pad) and comes with 4 choke tubes (Cyl/IC/Mod/Full). You should be able to get one of these for between 275 and 300 tops if they still have any in stock. Check with your dealer. The curent version of this gun, Model 89552, has a recoil pad, walnut stocks, nickeled receiver, and four choke tubes, and would probably run you in the mid to high 300s.

Go to http://consumer.gzanders.com/. Look under shotguns, click on "ISP Cowboy Guns" and look at Model 89554 for one on sale.

Stoeger Coach Gun.

Got mine for 300 dollars OTD. Used it on everything from dove to deer to dryers.

Thanks for the replies. I just want a good dependable short barreled double for home defense and playing around with. External hammers are fine. In fact they add a nice nostalgic touch that I kind of like. I'll check out the brands mentioned on all of them though.

Right now though the money just dried up. I went to retrieve my SCUBA gear from storage this weekend, and found that someone else got there first. Stole my regulator, mask, fins, BCD, and wet suit. That's going to cost me over a thousand to replace.

Dryers? Bet your wifed was happy about that!

Of course a friend of mine and I filled an old washer with gasoline and shot it with an M2 with every fifth round being a tracer until it lit.

Put that on your list of things you just have to do once in your life.:D
