I've been an avid shooter for years but I've never been in active competition. My shooting had really dropped off when I enlisted but I've gotten back into the swing of things and go up to the mountains at least every other week. Well I just ordered a CMMG AR-15 (14.5" 1/7 fixed flash a4 midlength) and my buddy mentioned that I should look into 3gun competition. well I don't have an appropriate shotgun right now, and while I was planning on picking up a winchester 1300 defender I want to take this into consideration. I've got a taurus 24/7 .40 for the pistol aspect but it's less than optimal. I think from what I've looked at I'll want to compete in the tactical/modified class, as I'd like to use my eotech.

what are some good places to look for some info? as in introduction and basics?

run what you have. If your going to buy a shotgun get a semi auto. The benelli m2 super 90 w/ 22" vent rib barrel and the Remington 1100 w/ 20"-22" vent rib barrel. As for optic i would see what distances you local matches shoot out to. If your local 3 gun match only goes out to 100 yards then the eotech is fine. If you go out farther like 300-400 then you want something with magnification. In this case you what a variable power scope like a 1x-4x. The trijicon accupoint 1x4 is very popular and is what I use.

I agree with Yar. Run with what you have. If you wait until you have exactly what you think you need, you may never get to a match. Any handgun, rifle and shotgun will be a good place to start. Good luck and shoot safe.

Ditto Brian Enos. Also, look at 3Gun Rules and Colorado Multigun.

The ideal Tactical-division shotgun is a reliable semi-auto that holds 9-10 rounds and is easy to reload. I like the Benelli M2 Field 21" and the FN SLP Mk1 22", in that order. Sights, stock configuration, etc, is up to you, but I'd run it pretty stock for a while until you figure out what works for you.

Your rifle and pistol will work just fine. If you feel the need to spend some money on them, consider a JP or Timney match trigger for the AR.

I personally don't think it's any less fun without the most expensive equipment known to man. Shoot what you have. I know I felt 3 gun was a lot more fun when you could be competitive without a JP AR15 and a $1000 optic, and a $1200 shotgun, and some custom pistol.

well the 24/7 will tide me over for now, but I really cant stand it's trigger. the long reset is what gets me, I wish I could fix that (like trade it in for a 24/7 pro)
eventually I'd like to pick up a g34 for a competition gun to compliment the 26, I think it might be a good place to start

I just need to add a shotgun to the lineup and then I'm good to go (I've got everything else I need) an autoloader will take longer for me to buy (I just spent over a grand on a carbine, the wife's a great sport but I dont want to push it to much) I can get away with a ~300 dollar pump. I've always like the winchester 1300 defenders, and they rack so smooth/fast. thing is I dont think they can take a choke, they're strait smoothbore. I'll move to an autoloader eventually.

Well everyone should have a pump shotgun as a home defense gun. I have a remington 870 myself but if I were to get a pump for competition I would get a browning as you don't have to fight the lifter when you reload. Pretty slick.

The remington 1100 tactical are pretty reasonable. Has everything you need except the easy loader lifter which is like a $40 part. If you shop around you can find them new for around $550. Comes with a 21" vent rib set up for remchokes.
