I have been looking into centerfire rifle competition, but cannot find what I am looking for. I would like to shoot 100-200 yds (since that is what my range has), I want to be able to use a store bought rifle with a scope in a caliber of my choosing. Basically a competition that would allow a "hunting" rifle to compete. My available calibers are: Rem 700 in .222, Browning A-Bolt in .308 Win, and coming up, Ruger M77 Target in 6.5 Creedmoor.

By store-bought, I just mean that it doesn't have to be custom everything. I can't afford $2-3K just to go out and shoot. Competition is fun and I would like to see how I compare to others with similar equipment.

I don't know about in TX, but my club here in NC has 100 yard high power rifle matches. I'd suggest going to a 100-200yard rifle match you know of with what you have. Just because someone has a $2k+ rifle doesn't mean they're shooting to the best of its abilities. If you have solid fundamentals and a gun that's reasonable, I think you'll surprise yourself.

I feel like I could definitely hold my own. I am still developing a load for the 222, but the 308 will consistently put down sub 1/2 groups at 100 and the 1 time I shot at 200, my 3 shot group was less than 1/2". It definitely could have been a fluke, because my best 100 yd group was only slightly better. That being said. All 3 of the cases on the 200 yd group showed signs of incipient head separation, so the rifle is now with Browning. Talk about stress... A gun out of the box shooting that good with no 'smith work (only careful handloads) and then send it back for possible headspace issues? My luck! I just hope it shoots as good when I get it back.
