Afternoon everybody,

I was wondering which makers of gear to modify or upgrade the SKS are the best. Mine happens to be Yugoslavian, apparently the first owner was a ham-fisted dude named Doma judging by his gouging the stock.

I plan to use the open sights on it and may or may not do an alteration for a big magazine (have only heard of Tapco as a reliable source for this part). Not sure what all else is regularly done to these relics to improve their function and ease of handling. Do the numbers on the front sight correspond to distance in 100's of meters?

I'd love to hear what folks have in the way of pet tricks or favorite extras that are especially well-suited to the SKS. Thanks in advance!

I have a few sks's that I love dearly. It's your rifle so you do what pleases you. If I were you I would leave it stock, as is. Most of the people that have problems with them started having problems after they started modifying them. However if your going to modify them yes Tapco products are the way to go. Good Luck

The only thing it may actually NEED is a recoil pad, nice and thick. The SKS stock was made for a small person, seemingly.

Theres not allot of aftermarket stuff for SKS's but Tapco has a good little list of US compliant parts and some guy over at the SKS Survivors Boards is selling some nicely machine trigger, hammer, and sear kits. Not to mention Murrays spring loaded firing pins.

Greetings Col.

I would advise you to spend some time browsing this SKS site for many of your questions. This site is run by Leo Schwartz, who is quite the guru of SKS rifles.

Your Yugo rifle is a C&R relic. Modifying anything removes this status and you then trigger a violation of Title 18 USC § 922(r) because of the excess parts count.
Converting to accept detachable mags is a violation as well as increasing the fixed magazine size.

While the ATF hasn't bothered to enforce this law -yet, you do need to be informed.
