I will be selling off some of my firearms in the near future and I need to know some FFL's in VA who will work with me. Specifically, what do they charge for a transfer? So far, the only ones I know of are 50-75 dollars. I had a guy, but he no longer works with me that was 25 a transfer.

VA beach is 2-3 hours away from me. Im up in Caroline county, VA. Just south of Fredericksburg. I can hit anyone between my house by kings dominion, and Reston, VA, but going south is out of my way (I have one heck of a commute to work).

Here is a list: http://www.ak-47.net/dealer/states/dvirginia.php

I used Patriot Services in Richmond (~ half way down) $10

Also, to sell, just mail it to your buyers' FFL. (As a buyer I always went to Patriot and picked my incoming guns up and paid him $10)

It would be a bit of a haul for you at 40 miles, but the only one I know of personally

Tricky, you. :D
Well, you have Green Top, Gander Mtn and a Bass Pro right there... I'd call all 3 and if they didn't offer the service, they'd likely have a lead for ya. If I hear of one, I'll PM you.

Floppy,
Greentop is 50 per transaction. I heard them telling another customer today. I've heard gander mention it being somewhere around 50 as well. I didn't ask at Bass Pro when I was there this morning. Should have thought of that.

Caveman,
To sell out of state, I believe it has to be a FFL - FFL transaction cross state lines. Either way, that is the way I will conduct interstate transactions.

Look around on gunbroker.com. I recently asked the same question here a few weeks ago and found somebody 10 minutes away that charges $20. nice. :)

You don't need to do FFL to FFL. The seller (you) only needs to make sure that you are sending your gun to a person who is an FFL who then does the paperwork for the person who bought your gun.

You can do that by getting the FFL's FFL number and checking it on the FFL website. It will show FFL number and address.

That way you are good and legally correct in sending a firearm that you sold to a FFL who completes the transaction.

This applies to out of state transactions for pistol and long gun.

In Virginia-to-Virginia (and Maryland-to-Maryland) State, long guns don't need the FFL.

Give the Va State Police a ring. I have many times just to make sure when I am doing something and have always had a good experience with the guys at the other end of the phone.

For what it is worth, I have only received rifles and pistols in VA, and the same in MD. In all cases my receiving FFL does not need it to be sent from a FFL

IN fredericksburg there's Combat Solutions. Great bunch of knowledgeable guys to work with. On rt 2, in the Bowman Center.

OT - You commute from KD to Reston? Do you have a helicopter? :)

The guys at Gilbert's in Springfield (Right off 95 at the 7100 exit for Ft. Belvoir) are pretty good.

And if you sell in VA...you don't need one of those guys to help you.

Right, and if you are selling to people out of state, they are the ones who need the FFL, so it's not clear why you are looking for one nearby. Ask the buyers to find an FFL who will receive a shipment from a non-FFL. It's legal, but some won't do it.

Gtone,
88 miles each way. It pays to drive a diesel VW. 45 mpg at I95 speeds.

Mal H,
That is why I am looking for a FFL to work with. FFL -> out of state FFL - >customers transfers go much smoother than non FFL - > out of state FFL - > customer transactions do. Most every FFL I have spoken with refuse to accept a transfer from a non ffl seller.

Green Top has accepted guns from private folks, but they want a copy of the driver's license and SSN if I remember the deal correctly. And it's expensive because they would rather be selling guns and stuff than answering the phone and hearing... "IS MY GUN THERE YET?" :)

John,
That is transferring an arm into the state for a private sale, I am looking to go the other direction. I guarantee the buyer won't be calling greentop to see if their gun is there if the buyer doesn't reside in VA :)

From their prices, I'm surprised that they are interested in selling things either. A garand for 1k, and it's not a NM? It's a SA probably in rack grade...most likely not even correct. SKS's for over 350, used and beat up. 450 for an un-issued yugo sks? Most of their prices are a bit high, but hey.... I have always been able to find ammo there in any caliber that I wanted...except .380 - which I don't have anyways.

At one point recently they were keeping the little .380 they had under the counter so they could sell a box with every new gun.

I appreciate their selection, inventory and friendly service. It's worth it to me to have 4,000 or more guns to look at while I'm making a decision. I don't buy milsurp-type stuff, so I never look at them and wouldn't know an overpriced one if the cosmoline stuck to me and it followed me home.

Getting involved in private sales is a sure way for a dealer to get a call from somebody about something. "Have you sent it yet? HUH?" :) "Are you sure?"

When they have buyers lined up three deep at each register and 10 or 15 sales guys running hour after hour, they surely don't need the distraction of doing a bunch of transfers for pocket change. They'd rather spend their time trying to entice me into handling one of those $6k shotguns or another Cooper.

Hey, but what do I know, I've only been shopping there since 1972. I wonder how much I've spent. Ouch.

John

Little bit out of your way, but Bernie and the guys at Virginia Arms in Manassas are tops to work with.

+1 on Virginia Arms. They just raised their FFL rates though - now its a $30 transfer + $2 VSP fee. Just a month ago it was $20 flat. Still a verry good deal considering the level of customer service they give.
