I've been leaning lately towards getting an AR15 for my next rifle. Up until now I have only had lever actions and single shot rifles, however my son is starting to get interested in shooting rifles and he is really likes the looks of a AR and the fact it is cheaper to shoot than my .45-70 or .22 Hornets is appealing to me. This gun would be for plinking in the back field and keeping in the house just in case of bumps in the night. I would love to find something close to the original Vietnam-era ARs look wise, but mainly just want a good budget rifle. Thanks for any help guys, while I have been using guns for half my life, these ARs are a new ballgame for this ole boy.

Just got a Sport 2 for 614.00. Only got to test fire it with 20 rounds so far. Working up a load with some AR Comp before i move on to 748. No issues with it.

Even though you said you like to find a Vietnam era style you may want to look at a M4 style with the adjustable stock. If your son is still small you can adjust it to fit him better. Something like the Ruger AR556.

I'm hoping to stay under $600 and I just need minute of bad guy accuracy. The retro look would be nice but not the absolute necessity.

You can get the A2 kit from PSA for $5oo and then all you would need is a lower which you can get for around $50 + FFL. If you wait for a sell you can get them for less and possibly free shipping. As a bonus, you and your son would have a fun project to build together.

While this one isn't a PSA, it is what the assembled rifle would look like.
