Sorry for the double post (on my phone here), but which daniel defense model?

Take your pick. I built mine to avoid SBR issues. My chosen configuration was a 14.5 inch barrel with fixed FSB and a 9 inch Omega X rail. If I had to do it over again I would have gone with the longer FSPM rail however. In fact I am considering doing just that through Smartgunner.

Short barrel Rifle. Rifles must have an overall barrel length of 16 inches. So if you purchase a 14.5 inch gun it has to be registered, etc. I got around this by purchasing just the upper then having a Flash hider pinned. I could then build the gun without worrying about the Tax stamp or registering it.

Ah that makes sense, thanks for clearing that up.

What do you guys think of the Ruger SR556? It caught my fancy quite some time ago, but that was before I could afford it.

Not a fan of piston ARs, especially the Ruger. There are lots of threads out there on the pros/cons. I'd say stick with standard direct gas impingment unless you know for sure the piston is worth the extra cost to you.

I am not a big fan of the Ruger, or any piston for the matter.

It is front heavy, a bit overpriced, and suffers from carrier tilt just like every other piston I have seen.

This isnt' to say it is a terrible gun. Just not a good value and has some drawbacks.
