hey, i just turned 18 not to long ago and bought my first gun...a .22lr savage model 64 and i am now looking for my first shotgun....i went to a local gun store and the owner turned me on to a few of the tactical pumps they had...i was looking to see what you guys thought of them....the mossburg 500, fn poilce, remington 870, and something winchester but i dont remember the model....i really liked the fn its felt like alot higher quality but was wondering what you guys thought of them...thanks alot

Well, a lot of folks here are going to point you in the direction of the 870. I just picked up a nice used 11-87 and really like it a lot...

Welcome to THR- hope you enjoy your stay.

There seems to be a majority of 870 fanciers here, for the obvious reason (more 870s have been sold since 1950 than any of the other makes/models). Of course, there is no reason to allow a mere 55 year record of unparalled reliability sway you one way or another 8^).

Even so, as I type this there sits at my left knee one of those FN Police Shotguns you mentioned liking. As a character-building experience I decided to buy one a while back and wring it out to see how it did. So far I haven't been able to find anything to criticize in a major way. You can see the review (so far) at http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=170316 . I wouldn't feel I was giving you bad advice to say, if you've shouldered it and it fits right/feels good, you should get it as opposed to anything that doesn't feel as good to you. They are good shotguns, just a Winchester 1300/Defender rebadged with FNH's name, and the package is a good deal IMO- long as the price is right. Mine was $265 out the door IIRC ($230 for the gun plus $20 shipping plus $15 transfer), if that helps.

No matter what you decide to get, remember that the gun itself is an inanimate object- it is up to you to make yourself into a capable and safe shooter. Work hard at it, and stay safe,

ok thanks one more question

ok thanks alot for all the information...i went back to the gun store this afternoon after coming across 200$ which puts my shotgun fund 3/4's the way to the 400$ price tag of the FN and have deffinantly decided to get the FN..now i'd like to start looking for accessories....i was thinking either a folding stock, a collapsable, or a speed loader with pistol grip and maby a forend with a flashlight and a rail for optics.....do any of you know any good company's that sell accessories that fit or that are for the FN police shotgun?....thanks alot

im adding this later but i rememeber the gun store guy saying the FN is almost the same as the winchester 1300 so does this mean that accessories for the winchester 1300 will fit the FN police shotgun???thanks again

Speaking of Winchester, the 1300 is a fine shotgun.

Most American made pumps are good.

Listen to Dave, he knows what he is talking about. Search for his threads.

Remeber the four rules, wear ear protection, and enjoy your stay here at the High Road.

A pump gun without any accesories makes a fine gun still, for hunting and defence.

If you are intent with a tatical shotgun, I would go with a Mossberg 590 with a mounted flashlight.

I think when your young or looking at your first shotgun, there is an attraction to the coolness / combat looking options for shotguns. Truth is when you pull the triggor they go bang. It's going to boil down to barrel/choke/ammo options for the end result.

thanks and all i know being 18 im probly thought of as the youngster that you have to tell keep your finger off the trigger and know whats behind your target and treat every gun as if it were loaded but thats not the case:banghead: ....i grew up around guns and have been shooting trap competitivly since i was 14, and had shot my first gun along time before that. I have had about 4 shotguns to this point that i used and that were for me i just didnt buy and "own" them...i also have had lots of exsperience with pistols and rifles...."looking for my first shotgun" means im trying to stray from the single shot perazzi that ive grown so tired of and do something new....like a tactical shotgun...im about to move out here shortly and it really is for defense and fun....so my question was will accessories for the winchester 1300 fit the fn police shotgun....thanks

Definitely the Remington

Over the past 30 years I've shot Remingtons and Win/FN. I've had nothing but bad luck with Winchester. Generally, I've had good luck with Remington. Some people have better luck with Fords - others have good luck with Chevy. I guess everyone bases their opinions and decisions on their own personal experiences. I won't ever buy another Winchester or Ford or Chevy.

Sorry if my post about hearing protection offended you. Dave McCraken, one of the most respected members of these boards, has hearing damage from shooting.

I'm only 14.

I think you'll like it here. We're a nice bunch.:)

I have a Benelli Nova 12gauge. I am very pleased with the gun. I have the 24" barrel in black. When it rains, the only thing that needs cleaned or wiped down is the barrel. Everything else has a plastic mold overtop of a metal layer in the receiver. The gun is simple, reliable, and will shoot any shell from the lightest 2 3/4" to the heaviest 3.5" mags. They make a tactical Nova with an 18 or 18.5 inch barrel. I think it's 18.5, but it might be 18. You can also get the model in nickel finishing. Check them out. The only downside was the forearm rattled. I eliminated about 80% or so by tightening the screws with an Allen wrench.
