I'm looking for info on deer hunting - books, web sites, etc. We weren't taught much in hunter safety. My Dad doesn't hunt, so I never learned from him. I have a bunch of friends that do, but I'd like to do some studying of my own.

I'm fortunate to live a half mile from thousands of acres of National Forest. I've been finding deer trails and marking them on my GPS. I was thinking about going and checking on some of them in the fresh snow, then following the fresh tracks. How far does the average white-tail range?

It'll be almost a year until next deer season, I'm hoping I can get the hang of it by then. And maybe get some pictures in the meantime.

Thanks for any help.

Dr James Kroll

I'd google up Dr James Kroll and go from there. You might try and find a copy of Heart and Blood: Living with Deer in America by Richard Nelson.

If you have access to a piece of land you might buy a deercam and monitor it all year. I have as much fun with those as I do hunting, and I get to see nearly all the game in the forest over a years time. 68 photos when I checked today.

Here's a little 1 1/2 year old deer from this month.

These are three older books that are easily found on eBay or Amazon:

Modern hunting with Indian Secrets

Complete Book of Outdoor Lore by Ben East

Successful Deer Hunting by Sam Fadala

Actual illustrations of favored plants and interesting startegies are found in these books. I doubt if you'll be sorry you bought them.

Good hunting to you.
