Does anyone know/heard of a guide for white tailed deer in NY that they would recommend for the 2012 Rifle deer season? I’ve looked around and found a few but I would like to hear about first hand experiences with them. I'm not interested in high fence hunting, nothing wrong with it but it’s not my preference. Thanks for any help

I suppose that depends on where in NY you want to hunt. There are two gun seasons; 1. upstate/adorondix, and 2. the rest of the state (southern zone).

The best choice would be to go to the area your new guide knows and hunts often. there is a LOT of public land, especially in the north. If possssible use private land for your hunts, however.

rifle, shotgun or bow?

i've hunted NY for 22 years.

I laugh when I see Texas deer hunts on TV where the deer are dog-sized.

The deer in NY are VERY BIG, especially in the northern zone. 200lbs dressed is not unusual.

Yum Yum!

The size of deer is relative to the environment. Norther deer grow larger because the need to survive the cold weather.

You would REALLY laugh of you got to see some of the Deer in Southern Florida.

I laugh when I hear of a frozen north state complaining about the cold weather and the high cost of heating oil when they won't allow oil exploration and drilling or refineries in their area.

I'll take smaller deer and government given a choice, thank you.

I have been all over the USA (including NY) and the largest deer I have ever seen was in Texas. I don't know where the myth that they are all small comes from, remember Texas is a big place and a hill country deer may be very different then a panhandle deer. Florida deer really are that small, but they make up for it in sheer numbers, we see tons of deer where we hunt (north of Pensacola) but I have yet to see one that would break 170lbs.

Thanks all, I'm from NY so I know the deer here get bigger than they do in some other states! I used to go hunting with a buddy who had a land lease a while back but he doesn't go anymore so I was hoping someone new of a guide. Public land was my backup plan haha

It's been my experience that NY deer have more body mass than most other states, but we don't often get the massive racks that are more common elsewhere... not sure why that is.

Here is a thought: phone a couple taxidermists in the zone you plan to hunt. Taxidermists are often a good source for guide contact info.

Good hunting to you.
