There are two basic types:
The new style made to fit guns that have an extra tapped hole in the middle.
The old style which adds a clamp around the barrel which adds expense to the mount and IMHO detracts from the appearance.
My question is, will a new style base fit an old style top strap?
Is the spacing on the existing holes for the adjustable sight the same?

FYI, I am using light loads and a very light red dot so I don't forsee the recoil to be an issue.

TIA

Yes, but the topstrap will need to have new holes drilled and tapped. The center hole for sure, and the front hole will probably have to be enlarged. Many/most of the older guns used a smaller screw than what the scope mount needs.

I've had the topstrap drilled and tapped on at least 3 of my old S&W revolvers. Similar to this 15-6.

IIRC... I paid a local smith (C&S) about $30 per gun, to do the job.
