Hi guys I am looking at a Remington 700p at my local Scheels in 300win mag, that is my caliber of choice for long range Target / Silhouettes, etc, up to now I have been a Savage guy but I have always believed in not limiting my self to certain Rules, Regulations, Options or life in general. So I am looking for a little help here hoping someone can help out.

1.The model I see in the store is listed as "Remington 700 Police" on the price tag for a price of 1049.00, but the barrel stamp just says Remington 700 on it without the "P" the Remington website shows it as 700P which is correct ?
2.The price tag also lists it as a McMillian Composite Stock and once again the Remington website has it as a H-S Precision Stock which is correct..
I also welcome any other Input on this rifle as well...

Thanks Everyone looking forward to the Remington Family of Shooting...Peace

That rifle in 300 should be a tack-driver. Will also do well at 1K yards. My 700P in .308 has what Remington calls a "5-R" barrel (24").

They wouldn't have a P anywhere on them. The model number on the box is unique to the line, as is the data sticker. When in doubt, a call to Remington customer support with the serial number will get a confirmation.

They are good rifles. I've had 2 in .308 and 1 in .223. All 3 were super accurate.

Thank you I put an email in with the local rep waiting for a response, I have heard a lot about the the stamp and you are correct trying to figure the stock thing out now either way both are good stocks, I probably will get one today regardless.

If the Macmillan isn't OEM, then I'd be wondering whether this particular
700P is NIB.

if it is a mcmillan stock, it may not be a 700p at all. the sps varmint and the 700p use the same barreled action, just with different finishes. park'd for the P, and matte blue for the sps.

H-S Precision is the stock(PST012/014) Remington uses for the 700P or Police model. Yes,the rifle itself is not marked with 700P or Police. It is a plain old 700 action with a Remington Varmint weight barrel on it with a parkerized finish.
I believe they originally came with 24" tubes then later switched sometime in the early 1990s to 26" barrels.

The guns are pretty accurate out of the box. They are noted for shooting 3/4" MOA with Federal GM or Blackhills 168/175gr . I wish Remington would stop putting such a long chamber throat on them, they could shoot a little better.

Good info above. Be aware that Remington, like many companies, is quite happy to make distributor specials, and some of their best rifles are these distributor specials. So, a normal 700P has the HS-Precision stock, but there's a chance that some distributor ordered some that are otherwise a 700P but have a different stock. Best bet is to get the model # on the box, do an internet search for that model #, and call Remington if you have remaining questions.

The 700P is a good rifle, but depending on your uses and preferences you might be better off with something different, like a stainless barrel, or getting an otherwise similar SPS Varmint and putting it in the stock of your choosing. The HS Precision stock they use on the 700P just doesn't fit my hands at all.

I have an original Remington 700PSS and they did come with the H&S Precision stock only....curious,,,,how long is the barrel?

Just to add to the random factor, I've got an SPS-Varmint in my safe that sure as heck looks Parkerized to me. maybe it is matte blue but it sure looks and feels like a darker version of the park on the barrel of the AR next to it.

the finish/oddball config discussion reminds me of the first 700 I ever set my mind on and tried to save up to buy (it sold before I could get enough saved to get it on layaway).
Configuration was similar to the current 700 VS SF™ II except it was parked like the 700P. when I called Remington to try and find out a model to try and get the local shop to order another, three different CS reps said they had no idea and no way to find the model designation (this was in late '96).

I have one in .308. There will not be a "P" anywhere, just Remington 700. It is the most accurate rifle I own, just as it came out of the box.

I have owned two: a .308 and a .300 WinMag. Both had HS Precision stocks with two forward sling studs and parkerized actions/barrels. Both were sub-MOA out of the box, and both were heavy. As I'm mostly a field and woods shooter, I sold them off in favor of lighter rifles. Neither one had any markings that identified them as "police" models.

The lower priced Remingtons use bluing (black oxide) on bead blasted steel. The result looks black and textured, much like manganese phosphate parkerizing. But, it isn't phosphate, and will rust more easily (both need to be kept oiled anyway). Bluing only looks blue if the metal is polished smooth first, on rough metal it looks black. Oh and this had confused me before, that's why I know and felt like commenting.

Like rodinal220 says, it's an M700 with a different stock and finish. Nothing really special about it. Marketing and nothing more. An SPS "Tactical"(a marketing term only) or an M700 'Long Range' will cost you less and be the same thing.
Winchester made an M70A Police, long ago. Oiled stock with manganese Parkerizing. Same rifle otherwise. We sold hundreds of 'em.

I'd say a nice Fiberglass stock over a crappy plastic stock is more than marketing...

The SPS costs less with a much lesser stock.

Any Remington with a Fiberglass stock cost as much or more than the 700p

As you guys can now see were my confusion may have came into play..not only did the manager nor the salesman know they choose to argue with me about it for a half hour would not even pull up the Remington website to confirm...Anyways thanks for all your input and taking the time to help me solve the my predicament. Peace

PS. I bought the Rifle on Sat the 14th and took the pic today the 17th the sign is probably still up go figure. It really pays to do some research.

Yes, that's a picture of a 700P. Stock is HS Precision, not McMillan (or MacMillin, for that matter :) ).

I see the confusion now - the stock is shaped like a McMuffin, and they must have typed up the description before breakfast. (Yeah, it's a HS Precision stock.)

Thank you its nice to know I am not crazy after all....well I guess that is still debatable. Peace to all from Northern Nv. and thanks for the input
