I'm hoping someone can help me identify the approximate DOB and value of two revolvers I've recently obtained; one left to me by my father and one I purchased at a gun shop.

1. Iver Johnson Trailsman 66 .22 cal 8-shot revolver with 6-inch barrell and smooth walnut grip. SN K16021 Serviceable, but not great looking shape, cracked wood grip.

2. Smith & Wesson .38 Special CTG, approx. 3-inch barrell, blue, checkered wood grips. SN 436024 EXECELENT SHAPE! Very well taken care of.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ANYTHING YOU CAN TELL ME.

The Iver Johnson is a pretty cheap gun, to my recollection. Mid 60s??

Not enough info on the Smith. Does it have fixed sights or adjustable? Round or square butt? What is the front sight like? 6 shot or 5? Model number (on the frame inside the crane)? What about an underlug?

Thanks for info on the Trailsman. Here is as much as I can tell you about S&W. Fixed sights, round butt (actuallly, oval), the sight above the chamber is just a groove, the sight at the end of the barrel is like a half cirle sticking up about a 1/3 inch, it's a 6-shot, when you open to load there's a number there (7063 8) and another number under the barrel....hard to make out, but looks like 636036. Sorry, I'm not familar with some of the terms you mentioned, so I'm just giving you every number engraved anywhere on the gun :) Main SN on the butt is 436024. Thanks again for your help!

The s/n of the gun is the one on the bottom of the grip frame, and includes any and all letters stamped there, too. It should also appear inside the right grip panel, and on the face of the cylinder and under the barrel.

It sounds like the barrel was replaced at some point if those numbers don't match. Also, barrel length is measured from the front of the cylinder to the muzzle. 3" was not a production length on early M&P's like this, so it's either cut-down or mis-measured? A photo would help scads, else it's hard to give solid information or values.

It sounds like you have a s&w .38 military & police model of 1905 manufactured between 1915 & 1942.

Standard barrel lengths are 2, 4, 5 & 6 inches. Measure the barrel from the end of the cylinder to the muzzle, not from the frame to the muzzle.

Standard Catalogue of S&W gives the following values: Exc: $450, VG $250, Good $200, fair $135.

Thanks to both Radagast and Ora for the insight. The barrell is 4 inches, and although there is a different serial number on the under side of the barrel than the number on both the grip bottom and inside grip, the barrel clearly looks as though it is original, as it's part of the frame. Not sure if that makes sense. I'm good. I have a general idea now of when the gun was made and it's approximate worth. Thanks again.
