Looking for load data

Hi, I'm new here. Looking to find and share handloading wisdom. I have picked up some newer bullets over the last year and cannot find load data for the cartridges I want to put them in. I thought before I started with a similar heavier bullet and worked it up I would ask if anyone has loaded Speer Impact 172 gr .308 in a 300 H&H? Data exists for 300 win mag, but not 300 H&H. The other, I have some Sierra Game Changers .284 165 gr. I wanted to put them in a 7mm STW. Again, no load data. Not sure if anyone can help, but I thought I would ask before reinventing the wheel.

Those bullets are new and likely the producers are still testing.... contact speer and Sierra for help. I have had many good responses from ramshot when they were their own company.

I did contact speer. I was kinda disappointed because I like speer bullets, I like how they haven't jacked up the price. But they were almost rude, I could tell the guy sounded like he couldn't hang the phone up fast enough. He said they have no data for a 300 H&H and he said he did not know if they would in future editions of their load book. I haven't tried Sierra.

I haven't tried Sierra.

Sierra is usually pretty responsive... but be aware, the info you get may or may not be correct. I asked for data on the new 169grn SMK for the .308... and I got immediate pressure signs using their suggested data. I would compare what data they give you to other existing data to see if it makes sense.

Yea, I think unless someone comes out of the woodwork and has tried either of these in the H&H family cartridges that I will work from the minimum load on a slightly heavier bullet, and increase in increments. I just hate to waste the bullets and the powder. These are both thirsty cartridges and rich I am not. I'll have to dust off my Chronograph, but I will try to post my findings here.

Working with a charge you are familiar with should help... I can swag loads that are just a single point change. Measure your bearing surface and compare it to what your normal bullet had.

I checked and it turns out Sierra has load data in 300 H&H for all their bullets. For those that don't have the Sierra manual, it is different than all the others. A small, fat manual (may be 4 inches thick), in ring binder. They may have the most extensive load data of all, and many obscure calibers I've never heard of. Good luck finding some of the bullets, but the load data is there if you do.

I just checked my Speer manual. I bet you’d be pretty safe using the data on this page

Right, that was what I was planning to do since the 172 gr Impact is an unkown. I will probably use IMR 4831 and start at 66.0 gr, and make a ladder heading up. I'd like to get them going a smidge over 3000. High performance elk bullets they are intended to be.

I'm not sure my version of quick loads has them but I can run the numbers for you if I do when I get home.

When I was shooting an STW I used retumbo with the 160 class bullets. 82-83gr got me 3200 depending on the bullet.

That is a good point, they might be real similar.

But they might not be. That was the issue I had with the 168grn SMK vs the 169grn SMK... the 169grn SMK was much longer than the 168... and it made a significant difference.

My QL does not have the Game Changers... I think it's to new of a bullet for data to be available. OP's best chance is the manufacturer.

I have listings for both the TGK/Game Changers, and the Speer Impacts. The impacts aren't named they are under the part# (.308, 172, Speer TB308H1).

With no personal experience using those lines, and without the bullets on hand to measure, I don't know how accurate the profiles are.

Based on the fact they are cup 'n core, vld types. Id probably just start with low data from a similar length/shape/weight projectile as suggested.

Thanks for posting this Nosler data. I was almost set on starting at 66 gr IMR 4350 being the min charge on a 180 gr Sierra bullet. Then to see Noslers Match bullets at closer weights are maxed at 66gr. I may have to start closer to 63. Keep my face intact.
