looking for low cost revolver

To my mind, don't get TOO hung up on the brand. Browse around a lot, keep an eye open for something that has a lot of holster wear but ain't been shot much. These are VERY common. Use the "checkout procedure" to spot a mechanical gem in a cosmetic turd .

I'm not too picky on brand. Besides I plan on starting out with a .22 anyway since I haven't shot a gun in 8 years. Then I'm moving up to a .38. I may be wrong with this but I think I'll have fewer problems with a "cheap" revovler then an "cheap" auto.

I have the Comanche III 3" barrel, .357 Magnum. It's sold through Firestorm-SGS. Their suggested retail is something like $274.00, but you can get them for under $200.00.

It's made in Argentina, and appears to be decently made. My only complaint is the double action trigger pull seems too heavy, but let off on single action is smooth and for me, nearly perfect.

I've fired both .357 magnums and .38 Special +P ammo through it, and it is very manageable.

This is the 2nd gun I've bought that was imported through SGS. The first is my Firestorm Gov't Model .45ACP. That gun is my primary carry gun when I'm not working. Work demands my weapon stay concealed, so when I'm at work, I carry my Bulgarian Makarov.

I'd hunt for a used K-frame Smith for the .357.

If you have a dealer you can work with for a transfer, there are all sorts of deals on these at the wholesale level.

For a .22, I'd either look for a used Smith or a new Taurus 94. I suppose you could find a used T 94 even cheaper. I have both a Smith Model 18 and a Taurus 94, and while I like the Smith better, the Taurus works just fine. (In fact, the Smith 18 seems to be developing a problem where it gets hard to cock and the cylinder doesn't want to rotate.)

i have a Ruger Single Six .22 and a Colt Trooper Mk III in .357/.38 but i dont know how much they cost cause i got them from my grandpa but i would not buy another SA which the .22 is, I HATE THEM!!! and i can't hit the broad side of a barn with that .22 but it works well for what it is. The Colt is different, I LOVE IT!!! it is a DA with a 6" barrel and its smooth, i like it better than my dads S&W .357 so that is my thoughts.

I didn't know this thread was still going. I ended getting a used S&W Mod 10-5 with 5" barrel.
The last person who had it must have a trigger job done becuase the trigger pull is real smooth. I brought this at a gun shop for $249.

Now I'm in the market for a .22...

Good gun. 10-5 means it can take a decent diet of +P. 5" barrel means a lot of stuff will work. Sights are probably regulated for 158s, so the Winchester/Remington +P LSWC-HP 158s should be perfect and will go plenty fast enough in that tube.

Is it round-butt or square?

Also, is it a "heavy barrel" or "pencil barrel"? The latter (skinnier tapered barrel) will shoot better than you'd expect and balances REAL nice...despite the length, it's a carry gun candidate with the right holster.

Go put a little Ruger Bear Cat in your paws! It's in your price range.

Barrels on 10-5

I have a 4" 10-5 with the regular (tapered barrel). I believe that all of the 10-5s were tapered barrel models.

No it's a pencil barrel. no ejecter lug either. It's a nice enough gun, but I prefer those two features. it's a square butt.

Sorry I don't like SA revovlers.

whm1974,

What you now own is probably the best looking double action revolver ever made. Just take it out and set it down in front of you and take a good hard look at it. It is a true classic. Smith & Wesson knew what they were doing when they put on that tapered barrel and left off the under barrel lug. Throw that 5 incher on the scale and weigh it. I'll bet it doesn't weigh more than 32 ounces. And that is for a 100% all steel gun.
