The regulations for our new weapon are as follows; 9mm must be double action only. The 6 manufacturers allowed are Beretta, Sig, Glock, SpringField Armory, Smith & Wesson, and Ruger. Mag capacity has not been determined yet, but no mags extending beyond the grip will be allowed. Does anyone know of a 1911 made by the required companies that would meet the regulations.

Yes, I would like to carry a 1911 but I've been looking around for a while and I think it's a no go.

The only 1911 I know that would even come close is the LDA made by ParOrdance...which isn't on your approved list.

If it were me, I'd get a Sig 226 (longer) or 229 (shorter) with their DAK trigger

If I wanted something in polymer, the closest you're going to come to a 1911 is the S&W M&P9 with the Apex Tactical Specialties upgraded trigger

Mag capacity has not been determined yet,

I'd wait until they decide this before I went shopping.

Yeah I'm just shopping around. The final call will be made at the end of August.

Colt makes the New Agent in a DAO configuration but not, as of yet in a DAO 9mm. They may add one to the line-up in the future but with trench sights and in an iffy length for reliability (from a 1911 standpoint) it wouldn't begin to compare to the options from which you'll have to choose. Also, not on your approved list of manufacturers. The aforementioned LDA has a great trigger (for range work) but I would never choose to stake my life on a Para and frankly the trigger is too light for carry in my opinion.

I'd pare down the options to a Sig, Glock or Smith or find out what the armorer will be choosing and why.

No, the department doesn't issue weapons we buy them ourselves. I've been looking around the net and I am leaning toward the Springfield XD. The next time I hit the range I will rent one and see how it handles. Anyone have experience with XD?

The Springfield XD handle and shoot well...especially the Tactical model with the longer barrel...but then I'm used to shooting Sigs.

I found the M&P a bit more comfortable in the hand and returned to target a bit faster...YMMV

I'd go Glock or XD. You won't find a 1911 that will meet your needs. I used to like XDs and they are great pistols, but they feel very top-heavy now that I've converted to Glock. Glock just has a ton of aftermarket support and are very simple to operate.

The M&P platform will give you the most 1911-like feel, but allow you a much higher capacity. You can get a thumb safety if your department requires it or not if you prefer.

I used to own a couple of Glocks, but I now own five M&P's... I'll never go back.

This is what I recommend:

I am most accurate with one of my custom 1911's, but the M&P is not far behind.

I agree with the others who have said that the M&P is the most similar to the 1911. The grip, although different, feels the closest and points quite like the 1911. Being an SAO disguised as a DAO, it is possible with the right aftermarket parts and some additional work to somewhat approach the 1911's trigger (more so than the others, as far as I'm aware). If you want a trigger that short and light, then the M&P also has the option of a manual safety from the factory, while some of the others do not.

I will be going with either the XD or M&P. They were highest on my list to begin with. I just don't know what the capacity limit will be. The board has set a 15 round magazine limit for St Louis City officers and I'm fairly certain they won't let us carry more then that.

I'd be looking for a new job not a new gun. Mag capacity limits for LEOs and you have to buy your own gun?

Yeah, I'm with wakstasz.

St. Louis P.D. and only a 9mm?

Go Glock. You'll likely have more Glock armorers in the Dept. to work on your gear.

I shot M&P Pro until we had G17s in the academy. Never went back. Get a 17 or 34.

Yeah it's rough for the StL City PD. They can only carry Beretta 92's with slide safety removed and 15 round mags. I'm not sure but the City may issue it to them.

Waktasz, someone earlier mentioned buying an XD when the OP stated that he can only have DAO guns. I would concur that the XD is a fine pistol except that it doesn't fit the requirements.

Folks, in the world of Law Enforcement, jobs became extremely scarce so saying "find another job" if being a Police Officer is what he wants, is extremely difficult to do. Some cities have absolutely ridiculous requirements. My local PD requires you to purchase a Full Sized Glock in .40S&W or .45ACP with night sights and you have to buy a TLR-1. They provide NOTHING for it except ammo during the academy. They will give you a stipend for Uniform Stuff AFTER you purchase your uniform, belt, holster, cuffs, etc. It's all part of the budget issues various cities are going through so I'm not surprised.

I'm more surprised to hear the ammo cap limit and the limitation to 9mm than I am about having to purchase his own. Maybe it's because every PD here locally is switching to heavier .40S&W and .45 ACP due to the ever increasing drug problems among violent offenders.
