Looking for something unique in .308

The price of a Glock over $600, but I want one of these:

I highly recommend the Savage 99 in 308. Been zapping groundhogs at 375 yards with the one in the picture below (Yes, with a 3-9x40 mid-80's Kassnar Wide-View Duplex Reticle scope, pretty low tech for 375 yards). It's not one of the pretty versions of the model 99, but it's fairly light, short, and as accurate as many bolt-action rifles I've owned. It's also a dream to carry in the woods or fields and holds five rounds in the rotary mag. The only way to improve on this one, in my opinion, would be to put a walnut stock and forend on it. The blonde wood makes it look like a leveraction SKS.
Just refinish it with a walnut stain. Saves all the hassle of locating and bedding a new stock.

I agree with you, Vern. I can't thing of a better rifle for deer and bear in Northern Vermont.

I paid $500 for my Savage 99e, and it was in unfired condition with a Marbles Gamegetter scope base with integral rings and a vintage Weaver K4 scope as well. The 99e's are usually pretty inexpensive because everyone wants a 99 with better wood.

I do plan to refinish the wood on mine. No problem with the wood condition, just don't like the blonde look. I hope to do it before early bear season, which is coming up in a few weeks. I'll post pics when I finish it.

Not as sexy as the new Ruger Precision Rifle, and 400 yards about maxes out the capability of the Savage (or maybe just my capability), but it doesn't weigh 10lbs and it is a damn-sight more pleasant to carry in the woods.

The RPR looks like it would be a fun woodchuck gun for the little critters out at 500 and 600 yards from the railing I shoot from. Probably need a bench and sandbags for that range, though. I'll stick to the closer shots, I guess.

Build your own

Savage is the way to go. Pick up a Savage receiver (I used a 30-06 LA from Savage) and build what you want. For my LA, I built a 6.5mm using a Shilen barrel and a SSS stock. Fantastic shooter out to 600+ yards.

Definitely Savage - the possibilities are endless.
