looking for statistics on permits & CCW's in NYC

This afternoon in a political science class the professor stated that 1 in 7 people in NYC are licensed to carry a pistol. I challenged this statement on the belief that CCWs are actually hard to come by in the city and he's probably thinking of a permit to own a handgun (he didn't know there was a difference). I volunteered to try to find some reliable information for him.

Does anyone know of citable/verifiable statistics for NYC?

I think there are 7 million + people in NYC, if 1 in 7 carrys, that a million guns. where are all the ranges and gunshops ?

I was hoping for some published numbers. Who knows what the person answering the phone would say. I'd have to call several times just to see if the information they give out is consistent.

I've seen the number 66,000 batted around a lot for the number of people in NYC with carry permits. I think Mayor Bloomberg said he was going to reduce the number to 43,000 (rather arbitrary). I'd bet that 1 in 7 owns guns, but that number certainly doesn't reflect the number that carries. So it's less than 1% have a carry permit in NYC. Still, it's better than San Francisco.

You could probably find out if you contacted the guys who keep public records...Isn't that how the newspaper for the Roanoke Times got all fo the CHL holders names? I can assure you though that it is WAY less than 1 in 7...I lived in the suburbs of NYC while growing up and only knew of 1 person who had a CHL and they were a landlord who collected rent from a bad neighborhood. He had to wait over a year and go to many interviews just to get it. Us mere peasants can't get one for self defense in NYC, but the Aristocracy can AKA Donald Trump.

I can give you the number for handgun owners in Westchester and Rockland due to the lists still being published by our local paper, as far as NYC however, only way I could think would be to do a Freedom of Information Request to the NYPD Headquarters

Thank goodness. God knows that the licensed permit holders are the root cause of crime in the city, this scourge must be wiped out.
