Hey, I am looking for Mil. Surp. .308 in North Texas. If anyone could give me some sources where it can be found, I would be obliged. At some stores that I have priced it at, it has varied in price from .45 to .65 a round; And that is not even the special app. ammo, like Hornady tactical and what not.

There has got to be a better price out there, short of reloading.

Its not exactly what you asked for but the armory in Virginia beach Va has some they will ship, do an internet search.

Cheap .308?

Not going to happen.

Fifty cents a pop is the best going rate for milsurp .308. Of course, most milsurp .308 on the market right now is very good quality,too...

Haven’t checked the price in a while.
!
Glad I got the dies and such…

Yep, there is no cheap 7.62x51mm anymore.
Even the South African I have now is going for about $65 per battle pack so when I sell it that's what I'm going to ask for it.

Reloading is the only economical option anymore.
If you plan to do that, be sure to buy boxer primed ammunition.

Ha I just looked up one of my old threads from November '04 and people were talking about buying good (South African, Portuguese, etc.) surplus for about $130-$150 per thousand. Wouldn't that be nice?

I haven't seen good .308 for less than .55 in over a year. With some patience and regular checking at places like Graf & Sons and Widener's, I have picked up some for less than .65 within the past few weeks. (.56 for Lithuanian surplus from Grafs and .51 for 2007-production PRVI. Damn, should have bought more.......)

Good luck. The GGG Lithuanian is actually reloadable. Last I saw it was fifty cents a pop.

Turn over rocks and you might find some OFV (Indian) for 35 cents a pop and the 1970's stuff ain't bad if it is not cruddy, it's reloadable M80 NATO spec stuff. The 1990's and newer OFV is total crapshoot; some is awful some is OK.

South African, Pakistani, FNM, etc. are usually not reloadable (Berdan primed).

Good luck on your hunt, but slim pickens are what to expect.

Cheap .308 was 2 years ago! I wish I had bought a truckload when it was $150 a case delivered at Century.

Mentioned in the link above. Screenshot taken 6/12/08.

Picked up 800 rds of Indian...
Let us know how that works out for you. Really - besides myself I bet there's lots of guys here that would be interested.

Lots of anecdotal evidence that Indian .308 is really horrible stuff.

Surplus .308

Found it today, gents. Got Czech surplus today for .37 cents a round; OR $45 for 120 rounds.

I bought all of the remaining ammo for sale.
Thanks guys..

Been shooting for 30+ years, reloading for at least 25.
In no way was I implying that I have/can get ammo cheaper than anyone else.
I love these posts. "Ha ha, I've got mine, good luck getting yours".

Very helpful post.

The post was simply to state that I have not bought .308 ammunition for a long time and didn’t realize how much it had gone up.
Please forgive my ignorance you are greater than I.

tap, if I may be so bold as to offer a suggestion, don't foget to hit pawn shops, estate sales, gun shows and private sales for ammo.

For example, I picked up a bunch of 9mm for .08 a round at the last show in Indy and just last night I picked up 2.5K of .308 (Chinese) when I bought a rifle off someone at .15 a round. Of course, depends on your market. Where I am the market is saturated as there is the highest per capita gun ownership rate in the nation so prices are lower.

To use a quote from a great movie, Lord of War, "selling guns is hard work", but so is buying guns.:D

taprackbang - IIRC, there was some Czech stuff that is corrosive. Make sure you check into that before you use it.
Not really a huge issue but it does take some extra cleaning.

Thanks guys

Hey Tejon, I will hit the estate sales and pawn shops. Thanks for that.
I had the theory of buying my gun around ammo availability which led me to a Mosin Nagant M44. 7.62x54r is SO cheap! (880 rounds for $179.00!)

But the reliability factor led me to an HK 91 (OK, so its a PTR 91, improved H&K) Which led me to buy .308 Win. I am still looking for deals.

Goon, the headstamp on the Czech I bought says "308 W O 82" This is NON-corrosive .308 ammo, but I will watch out for the corrosive stuff. I am used to cleaning my M44 constantly 'cause '54r' ammo is corrosive.

Good day guys.
