thinking about building a m1 styled like a the socom rifle and was wonder what people think about how I should go about it. I would like to use this rifle for target 200 yard + and for hunting(white tail) and would like to have it chambered in 308. here are some of my thoughts, synthetic stock, shorter barrel. I would like do this on the thrifty side and upgrade as i go. I like to do most of my own smithing and can get help on the more complicated items. I am starting from scratch. any thoughts?

also if you have any ideas on finding good deals, like the tip i recieve when building my 10/22 of going to boyds seconds (blaster stock finished with two little nicks for 40 bucks) my kind of buying

"...thrifty side..." Buy a receiver or 'rack grade' from the CMP. You can get a Danish return rifle with no stock for $295. Receivers start at $150. You're looking at buying a .308/7.62 barrel and having it installed anyway.
