Enthusiasts Stock Up on Firearms Over Fears of Dem Crackdown
Gun owners worry a Democrat-controlled White House and Congress will lead to stricter gun laws.

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- When 10-year-old Austin Smith heard Barack Obama had been elected president, he had one question: Does this mean I won't get a new gun for Christmas?

That brought his mother, the camouflage-clad Rachel Smith, to Bob Moates Sports Shop on Thursday, where she was picking out that special 20-gauge shotgun -- one of at least five weapons she plans to buy before Obama takes office in January.

Like Smith, gun enthusiasts nationwide are stocking up on firearms out of fears that the combination of an Obama administration and a Democrat-dominated Congress will result in tough new gun laws.

"I think they're going to really try to crack down on guns and make it harder for people to try to purchase them," said Smith, 32, who taught all five of her children -- ages 4 to 10 -- to shoot because the family relies on game for food.

Last month, as an Obama win looked increasingly inevitable, there were more than 108,000 more background checks for gun purchases than in October 2007, a 15 percent increase. And they were up about 8 percent for the year as of Oct. 26, according to the FBI.

No data was available for gun purchases this week, but gun shops from suburban Virginia to the Rockies report record sales since Tuesday's election.

"They're scared to death of losing their rights," said David Hancock, manager of Bob Moates, where sales have nearly doubled in the past week and are up 15 percent for the year. On Election Day, salespeople were called in on their day off because of the crowd.

Obama has said he respects Americans' Second Amendment right to bear arms, but that he favors "common sense" gun laws. Gun rights advocates interpret that as meaning he'll at least enact curbs on ownership of assault and concealed weapons.

As a U.S. Senator, Obama voted to leave gun-makers and dealers open to lawsuits; and as an Illinois state legislator, he supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons and tighter restrictions on all firearms.

During an October appearance in Ohio, Obama sought to reassure gun owners. "I will not take your shotgun away," he said. "I will not take your rifle away. I won't take your handgun away."

Gun advocates take some solace in the current makeup of the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled 5-4 this summer to strike down the District of Columbia's 32-year ban on handguns. For now, gun rights supporters hold a narrow edge on the court, but Obama could appoint justices who would swing it the other way.

Franklin Gun Shop outside Nashville, Tenn., sold more than 70 guns on Tuesday, making it the biggest sales day since the shop opened eight years ago. Guns & Gear in Cheyenne, Wyo., also set a one-day sales record on Tuesday, only to break that mark on Wednesday.

Stewart Wallin, owner of Get Some Guns in the Salt Lake City suburb of Murray, Utah, said he sold nine assault weapons the day after Obama was elected. That same day, the gun store Cheaper Than Dirt! in Fort Worth, Texas, sold $101,000 worth of merchandise, shattering its single-day sales record, store owner DeWayne Irwin said.

One Georgia gun shop advertised an "Obama sale" on an outdoor sign, but the owner took it down after people complained that the shop appeared to be issuing a call to violence against the country's first black leader.

The president of a Montana gun manufacturer stepped down last month after word that he supported Obama led to calls for a boycott of the company.

While Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, attributes some of the sales boom to the tanking economy, he thinks the Democratic sweep is the top reason why guns are suddenly a hot commodity.

"I don't think he'll be able to stand up to that anti-Second Amendment wing of the Democratic party that's just been spoiling for chance to ban America's guns," LaPierre said of Obama.

During the campaign, the NRA warned that Obama would be the "most antigun president in American history." And while Vice President-elect Joe Biden owns shotguns, he has supported a ban on assault weapons and has said private sellers at gun shows should be required to perform background checks.

But Mark Tushnet, a Harvard Law School professor who has written a book about the gun debate, said new firearms regulations will be a low priority for an Obama administration and Democratic Congress facing a global economic crisis and two wars.

"Maybe the gun-show loophole will be closed, but not much else," he said in an e-mail. "I'd be surprised, for example, if Congress enacted a new assault gun ban."

Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, said his organization will continue to press for what he calls "sensible" restrictions -- background checks at gun shows, a ban on military-style assault weapons and cracking down on illegal gun trade. He believes he has the backing of the new administration on those issues, but any fears of a broader crackdown are unfounded.

"The one thing that they agree strongly with us on is that it's too easy for dangerous people to get guns in this country," Helmke said. "I guess if you're a dangerous person you might want to run out there and buy some more, but otherwise you should be OK."

"I'd be surprised, for example, if Congress enacted a new assault gun ban."

I guess I would too. Figure they'll just pass the old one again. And a lot more such nonsense of course. Registration. Owner IDs. Then taxes on everything to pay for the registrations and ID programs. All "common sense" gun laws of course, from their point of view anyway. To cut down on crime, you know.

Liberals love to control us with new laws and taxes. Wonder how long it's going to take them to think of taxing all our income, just deposit our checks in the Treasury and make it illegal to break any laws. That should fix it!!!

Wonder if they found out abot that shipment of AK ammo Academy has been liquidating with grat success in Texas. :evil:

Which of course reminds me - I think a little trip to the two Academy's in my Richmond area is in order tommorrow.

I do not know if you guys are kidding about this but I am taking it rather seriously. I recall the Clinton ban on "high capacity" magzines (because we all know 12 rounds is too many). There are a few things I want to pick up before mid January.

So the new president is going to be sworn in on 1-20-2008 and you some how think he is going to sign a new sweeping AWB on the 21st?

I personally believe that Pelosi will sit on any AWB for years before it ever see's the president's desk. At the quickest it will be 18-24 months.

I think they'll pass the gun ban only this time with no sunset clause. They won't make that "mistake" again. I bet they'll try to include all semi-autos as assault weapons too.

All gun owners need to be members of:

NRA
your state RA
CCRKBA
SAF.. and probably a couple more

I agree with you. Honestly, I think he will *try* to get this economy mess straight first. But I can see him trying to make some changes about gun rights in late 2010 or 2011.

I don't wish to rain on anyone's parade but quite frankly Obama has a lot more crap to worry about than guns. I just don't see this happening anytime soon. Maybe it's just the optimist in me talking. Save the flames, I voted for McCain.

Well, I guess I may have to log on to Magpul's website and buy another 10, 30 round mags. Next payday I may have to buy some more reloading components if I can find them. Like Cartman said on that one Southpark episode...."I hate Democrats!"

During an October appearance in Ohio, Obama sought to reassure gun owners. "I will not take your shotgun away," he said. "I will not take your rifle away. I won't take your handgun away."

I still find it laughable that this somehow even entered his brain as a viable option.

he won't take them away. He'll take away your right to buy new ones first. Then, if all plays out, he can ask you to turn them in and brand anyone caught with one a felon. that is how I see it happening, if he gets the chance.

These days I'd sooner trust a politician then a member of the press. Their conduct during this election was disgraceful.

Notice they say "weapon" not firearm, or anything less subdued.
"Weapon"

see how they vilify us.

Speaking as an IL resident, you guys are in for a treat:

No gun stores within 5 miles of a school or park; (didn't pass)
FOID cards even if you want to shoot, let alone own;
Ammo mark ups as much as 500% (didn't pass)
Police harsh on owners, they can take your legally transported firearm
even if you have done nothing wrong, if they see it in your car/truck,
on "good faith";
No carry of any kind;
Harsh penalties for owning or carrying in "restricted zones";
Prosecution by law in self defense cases in your own home;
Micro-stamped ammo, making illegal to reload your own;
etc...etc...etc...
Obama voted for all of these in IL since he has been here :(

Too bad he couldn't have voted "present" on them, huh?

f.y.i. word here is he has an immediate "executive order" draft ready for an assault weapons ban,
but it's just a rumor, take it as it is. Good for 90 days until congress can ratify,

I'm not ready to panic!!!

The Dems picked up some seats and got a President. 2nd Amendment supporters are still in Washington on both sides. We all need to remember that politicians are a self serving lot, and will be concerned about getting re-elected themselves. This is not a mass movement to change the Constitution. We have a fairly conservative pro-2nd Amendment Court right now, and that is key as I see it. I'm not ready to panic, nor go to sleep at the wheel. Right now, I personally plan to be vigilant and continue hunting, shooting and CCW.

Regardless of which party you are for - they do change up from time to time, been that way for over 200 years. We got mid-term elections in 2 years. Get involved, be active and VOTE...

Lets talk Guns - I took my Colt SAA 3rd Generation to the range Wednesday. Perfect weather, no malfunctions, big round holes, and black powder smoke - a great day!!!

For some reason I don't trust the 'common sense' of someone who cannot accurately interpret 'shall not be infringed.'

The "press" sold us the bill of goods that we are stuck with now, why would I ever trust them??? Lies by the press about gun owners will be used by the socialist to make gun owners miserable.

Turn off the MSM and start working for your gun rights.

Just Jim

Your right the press did sell a bill of goods.

I've been wondering when the back-benchers that actually voted for him are finally going to get buyers remorse?

Tonight, on french TV new, there were interviews of gunshops owners talking about many customers buying a lot of guns right now, fearing future bans.. including republican voters, AND Democrats...

and the stupid journalist to add this comment...

"though, Obama, in his campaign clearly stated that he was not against the RKBA, and only want to ban "assault" weapons, and prevent children and felons to get acess to firearms.." (while showing images of various semi auto AR's, 16 and 20 inchers)

Not very high road... but this journalist clearly as NO idea of what assault weapons are...

Here in Europe they still see Obama as the Messia... The wake up (some already know that Obama is a pain in the ..... economically speaking for europe... see the Tanker contract won by Airbus and now jeopardized..) will be painfull for those dreamers..

I am sure that Obama is the Messiah. But I have to remember that so was Clinton in 1992. And then we elected Bush-- arguably the most hated American President that we've had from the world's perspective in the last 100 years. And then we elected him again.

I hope that Europe doesn't take this election as an indication of an "evolved perspective" in the USA. Its just like the business cycle-- Boom and Bust. It was just their turn. It will be ours again. And then theirs again. And so on and so on...

But this really should not be seen as some monumental shift in American society. It was a "Perfect Storm" condition that affected one single snap-shot in our history. And that is really all it is.

Unfortunately the majority of them do !

They don't get it that it was actually the 2nd part of the Bush administration failure that permitted this.. they see Obama as the messiah.. and unfortunately (hopefully) they will soon understand their mistake..
