LOP is measured from the rearmost surface where your finger contacts the trigger to the forwardmost surface where your shoulder contacts the recoil pad.
When looking for a shotgun, LOP is a very crude measurement, since the distance from the wrist to the trigger can vary quite a bit. Compare, say, an 870 Wingmaster to a Citori 525 to a Beretta White Onyx. By the numbers, they have very similar measurements. The 525 and the Wingmaster are nearly identical, with the same LOP, same drop at heel, and a negligible 1/8" difference in the drop at comb. Obviously, though, they fit and feel quite different from each other.
LOP is close enough if you can get a finger or two between your nose and thumb. LOP that's a little off can be compensated for by moving the support hand forward or back.
