Loss of hunting dog

I'm not much for praying but all dogs do go to heaven. An uncle of mine lives on family property and that has a cemetery for the dogs that dates back to 1914. Most were big bodies labs born to hunt ducks on the Rhode Island coast. It's truly an amazing memorial.

My dog isn't a hunter but is a great companion. Old girl is 3 legged and named Peggy. Honestly the best dog a man could ask for, just wish I had one of her puppies to carry on the line... And have that "extra" leg. She's about 5 now but just as fast as a 60lb mutt can be.

Very sorry for your loss. I lost my best buddy, Beans the Chihuahua last October. I'm not too manly to admit it took a long time to get over and many tears were shed. I loved her.

Of course, the only thing she hunted was my wife's shoes. She was a jealous little dog(4.5lbs of her) and hated it when my wife was closer to me than she was. She would wait until my wife was asleep and pee in her shoes. Only hers. We blamed it on our Pom until Beans died and it stopped.

Thank you for all the support it means a lot, its been almost a week and hasn't gotten easier yet. I love all your dog stories.

I am tearing up just thinking about it. I have really only broken down twice in my life and one of those was when my dog died.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I can relate. I lost my Golden Retriever over 15 yrs ago. He was a great buddy and fun to hunt with. He never brought back more than I shot though. Some of you guys had very special dogs!

Man talk about losing a loved canine companion, I lost Fred a German Shorthaired Pointer way back in the early 80's 1981 to be exact. I still remember a good buddy of mine trying to limit out on pheasant, (the other 2 and myself had already limited out) he still needed just one bird, well after pointing two other birds, and my buddy missing them both. Fred decided enough of this nonsense and when he pointed the final bird, he broke point and caught his final bird. We all had a good laugh. I still get all choked up every time I think about that dog, all the times we hunted together, and rarely if ever got skunked. Also had a yellow lab called Sheba, she was quite a gem also and I still miss her, but nothing like Fred, everybody that ever hunted with him said he was a "depression dog", as he took the depression out of hunting. It just didn't matter if it was pheasant, quail, chukar, or ducks, if there was one out there he would find it.
