In the very beginning the dude down in the hatch hears/feels the explosion when they are opening the hatch. He opens a safe a grabs a long arm. It looks like he loads a 10 round AK magazine into it. What gun was it. Everything in the "apartment" / living area was 60s style. The gun had a wood forearm but did not look like an AK.

Yeah, looked like some sort of AK, definitely an AK type mag. How and the heck did that Irishman get down there though?!

It was a Romanian PSL, as far as I could tell, minus the scope, AKA Romak III, and so on... And his handgun was a Makarov. The whole little vault there was full of Warsaw pact small arms. I saw the camera pan past a couple of nickled Tokarevs as he walked into the vault, I thought.

Off topic, but didn't anyone else think it was a little far-fetched that Jack would remember the face/voice of some guy he met who-knows-how many years earlier for 5 minutes in a stadium while running?

I dont think it was a PSL. The barrel was too short. Looked like a Wasr-1 to me, honestly. Good Mak pistol shot in this one. Of course, I had to spoil the show by identifying every gun to my roommate as it came on the screen ;)

No, because he met him the same day that he performed the miracle back surgery on his future wife (or did she just end up being his fiance?). In fact he met him between the time he thought he failed and when he discovered her miraculous recovery.

As for the Warsaw Pact weapons, think about it ... guy calls everyone "brother" ... has longish hair (and did many years earlier)...listens to Mama Cass and is living in a bunker ... maybe he's a liberal who's not afraid of guns. A member of the Simbonese Liberation Army or something ... or he's a soviet spy?

I've been completely hooked on this show since it started. I was a little disappointed that they didn't show what happened to the guys on the raft. Still can't believe that Sawyer didn't get a shot off before he got shot at the end of last season.

I do have to say though that someone had to be high as a kite to think up this story line. A LOT of wierd things going on.

No. Because of the circumstances of thier meeting, it stuck with him for awhile. Made sense to me. I've met people under stressful circumstances that I will never forget, despite only spending minutes with them.

Great show. I can't figure Desmond the Irishman's timeline though.

The French woman has been on the island for 16 years, since her expedition was wiped out.

Jack is not old enough to have been a practicing surgeon 16+ years ago.

Jack met Desmond in the stadium maybe 5-10 years ago, max.

So how long has Desmond been in the bunker, and how does he get in and out, if it has been less than 16 years?

And what medicine is he injecting into himself, and what is he "quarantined" for?

The show sure keeps you guessing.

Rockrivr, Sawyer did get off a shot or two before getting hit. IIRC, he actually fires first.

As far as Desmond goes, I got some very heavy religious vibes off the encounter on the stadium stairs...the whole thing about "What if you did fix her" and "See you in the next life, brother".

Anybody else catch that the "QUARANTINE" label was on the INSIDE of the hatch??? It's the outside of the island that is quarantined...I bet the shots Desmond gives himself are to protect against the stuff that caused the quarantine.

I think you're onto the key with "see you in the next life, brother."

IMHO, they're all dead already, and have moved onto "the next life."

It's one of the only ways to explain all of the paranormal phenomenon/magic etc going on.

Yup, caught that. I've thought about the possibility that they might all be dead as well, but I seem to remember a cast member or someone connected to the show saying this is not the case.

Desmond in the stadium and Desmond in the bunker might be dopplegangers...

Chris

Just to keep the gun-relatedness going, anyone catch what type of bolt action rifle the French lady was carrying?

I think the doppleganger theory is pretty likely. There's also the connection of the numbers, from the lottery winner, to the numbers on the hatch, painted on the mural inside the hatch, and listed on the labels of the injections. The numbers are also shown in several other places, as well.

There are just way too many mysteries in the story to even begin to tackle them. It sure is fun to theorize, though.

On second viewing, GWM has a good point; while it looks like a PSL mag, the barrel's just not long enough. However, they are kind of notoriously bad with the gun continuity on Lost. (check out the episode where Ethan gets it, and try to keep track of who's packing what.) Maybe he loaded a PSL, and in the next take it's switched with an AKM? That'd take a lot of the fun out of even bothering to keep track...

Honestly, I just think they used a 10 round mag in a WASR-10 or something like that. The audience does not see the distinctive curve of the AK 30 round magazine, so they dont automatically presume that is an AK "yawn". Its something differant.

I thoroughly enjoy this show. It is the only bit of network TV that I budget time for. My greatest fear is that the writers will choke on their own storyline. Remember Twin Peaks? It was a great show. Great writing, great characters, good music...all wrapped up into a cool premise. Who, in this strange town, killed Laura Palmer and why? Too bad the writers (Lynch and others) were making it up as they went along. The wheels fell off about 1/3 of the way through the second season.

I really hope that the writers on Lost have a defined story arc that they are following otherwise it is going to be very disappointing in the long run.

Regarding the guns used...it looked like a Makarov to me. The rifle appeared to have a thumbhole stock...but was certainly from the AK family.
