We are diminished. I am glad I had the chance to train with him and saddened that I will not get another chance. RIP Louis...............

Remembering Louis Awerbuck

By Frank Sharpe on June 25, 2014 in Monderno

http://yfainc.com/

Louis passed away on June 24, 2014. We want to thank everyone, for your many years of support and friendship.

There have been a number of requests for information on any memorial service that might occur. Louis specifically forbade us to hold a memorial service, but he never said anything about a Celebration of Life. So, that being said, we are contemplating holding a Celebration of Life service in Phoenix, likely in July. We would need to have an idea of how many people might attend so we'd know the best place to hold a celebration. If you would be interested in attending, please let us know (and how many would be with you) so that we can proceed with arrangements. Thank you!

Stubborn, single-minded, articulate, knowledgeable, independent, moral, inquisitive, interesting and accomplished. There is not much more I can say about the character of one of my oldest and dearest friends.

I decided to post this short note in hopes of curtailing the speculation and misinformation that is circulating regarding Louis’ death, which will, hopefully, set the record straight.

Without getting into too much personal detail, Louis had a series of serious and debilitating medical problems that left him very ill, weak, and at times, barely able to move physically; but perhaps most seriously, medical problems that left him filled with despair and without hope for recovery. Tuesday, at noon, my friend, Louis, made the ultimate decision to end the many months of pain and suffering that he had been experiencing.

He and Leigh spent this last weekend with my wife and I, and on Sunday morning Louis and I sat out on the back patio where Louis and I had what was probably the longest conversation we’ve ever had in the 35 years that I knew him. I am so thankful that we did that; little did I know it would be our last. There would have been so many more things I would like to have told him.

Louis, a simple but very insightful man who had a huge impact on literally hundreds if not thousands of lives.

And like all successful men, there is someone special behind the scenes providing unwavering support and in Louis life that special person is Louis’ life-long partner, Leigh. Since December, when the downhill spiral began, she has been unwavering in her love and support for Louis. I believe most women would have faltered under the incredible load foisted on her by his deteriorating health. Never, not once, did she give up or voice dismay at the situation other than frustration at the medical community, which we all did. Bless you Leigh, you are a Heroine in the true sense of the word.

Louis is gone in person but his memory and teachings will live on longer than any one reading this, I believe that with all my heart.

I hope that his wish came true on Tuesday, that he is embracing his Mom and Dad, and Trigger is at his feet.

Totsiens Gawie my ou vriend.

I've reopened this thread now that John has posted an announcement to the entire board.

I haven't heard anything else beyond the initial announcement that appeared at the YFA website (http://www.yfainc.com/) regarding final arrangements. I would, on my own initiative and without having heard anything else by way of direction or instruction from anyone so far, encourage all the YFA alumni who see this post to network with each other through their local training coordinators as this situation evolves. YFA was a small organization, just Louis and Leigh, and my best take on things at present is that Leigh doesn't need a lot more demand on her time and attention. It's my opinion for what it is worth that, for the time being at least, telephone contacts should be limited to well known individuals who have already established a working relationship with YFA - the network of local training coordinators who arranged YFA classes at various locations around the country. Since that network exists, and since the local training coordinators usually maintained email contact with the students who took YFA classes in their areas, it seems reasonable to leverage the existing networks now.

I am following my own advice, and as soon as I hear anything from Leigh by way of my own local training coordinator, I will update this thread.

In the meantime I feel sure cards and letters will be welcome. Please keep in mind the fact that Leigh also lost her father only a couple of months ago, and be as open hearted as you can manage in regard to expecting rapid replies to any communications you may attempt with YFA at the present time.

Thank you...

Update on the Celebration of Life event: the decision has been made that the Celebration of Life for Louis will be held in Phoenix about the end of July. We are currently in the process of securing an appropriate facility. After the facility has been booked, we will not be able to increase the number of people attending and will go with the number who have contacted us by the end of this week (July 4, 2014). Thank you to everyone who has responded to date, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Having been on the road for several days and away from a keyboard, I don't know when this was posted - but here is the latest update from Leigh at the YFA website:

http://yfainc.com/

Louis passed away on June 24, 2014. We want to thank everyone, for your many years of support and friendship.

I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all our students and friends who have called, written, emailed and texted with their condolences, support and offers of help. In a difficult time such as this it is truly comforting to know that those of you who have been there through the years are still there for me now if I need to reach out. I believe that Louis would have been very touched by and appreciative of all the support I've received.

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart.

Back from another long road trip (Texas, this time), and have been away from a keyboard most of the 3800 or so miles and a couple of weeks. At this point I haven't seen any further updates, but I keep finding tributes as I look for new information, so I thought some here might appreciate the links...

Sorry, no - I haven't heard from anyone personally, or seen any messages about how the celebration went.

ETA: I did get a third-hand report which indicated there were over a hundred people present, and the occasion was more one of gratitude than sadness.

Sorry for the delayed reply, just got back home from several days of no connectivity elsewhere.

Last word I had was that Leigh was doing well.

I had a chance to follow up with a friend who was at the memorial. Sounds like it was very nice and mirrors what you said above. The one thing I heard that I know was on the back of mind and was likely on others, they did an autopsy and his lungs were fine.

This time of year is a bit more tough as I would usually take a class or two in the fall. I know that's not possible but I find myself getti caught off guard as I look to see what weekends I'm free for a class and then want to check to see if he is in town.

The other hard bit, is that I see the recent pictures of him, and he looks like his vibrant self and I just seems unreal he is dead.

Any idea if he is buried (vs ashes scattered) somewhere so I can pay my respects when I pass through AZ?

I'm unsticking this thread... it's been a month and no new information has been forthcoming.
