lower receiver upon which to build a rifle with M16A1 parts kit?

They have a sale going on with this M16A1 parts kit, and I'm aware that the barrel needs machining to fit the front sight assembly on there. I'm wondering if any old AR lower receiver will work with all these parts, or if you'd have to purchase a specific Colt lower?

Also, what do they mean by "all NFA rules apply"? I was under the impression that the lower receiver assembly needs to have extra holes and such drilled in order to accommodate a select-fire trigger group... is the trigger group which is included with this parts kit, the select-fire group? If so, does that mean one would need to purchase a separate semi auto trigger group to get a working semi auto rifle from this parts kit?

Yes, these are apparently demilled M16A1's, and as such, any brand lower would fit, except older Colt AR-15 lowers.

They say "all NFA rules apply" because the trigger parts are off a full-auto capable M16 rifle.

Not only will you have the expense of getting the barrel machined down, but you will have to replace most of the trigger parts to be legal.

In all, $500 bucks for a collection of old used M!6 parts and a new unfinished barrel blank is not a good deal atall.

No, an M16 bolt carrier is perfectly fine as long as the lower doesn't have M16 select-fire trigger parts in it.

Many brand new AR-15's come from the factory with M16 type bolt carriers.

Geoff, you could just buy a Del-Ton parts kit for under $500, add a lower, and be good to go. Keep in mind that the base $465 price is for a fixed A2 front sight & flat top upper upper with no charging handle. You could add $10 for an A2 upper with fixed carry handle & sight; or (what I would do) shop around for a flip up rear sight which you like, and leave room for any future optics purchase. The nice thing is you can get the kit in 20", 16" Carbine, or 16" midlength with your choice of profile in 1x9 twist bbl, for the same base price. The 1x9 twist will stabilize heavier rounds than the 1x10 in the J&G kit, and you don't have to pay for machining or refinishing on the DTI bbl. The lower parts kit is also semi-auto, so you don't have to replace that, unlike the FA kit with the J&G unit. Plus, you're getting all new parts in the DTI kit.

Any lower other than the correct A1 or XM16E1 lower offered by Nodak Spud is IMHO, a half-arsed attempt at trying to build a correct Vietnam era retro rifle. I ought to know that NDS has EXCELLENT quality lowers. I already own a 601 slick side, 2 XM16E1 partial fence and an A1 lower. Excellent quality, excellent tight fit and in the correct gray anodized finish just like the originals! Matter of fact, here's a few pics:
