Looking for some suggestions on this project, my goal is to effectively punch a target at 1000yds using AR platform.

I'm learning stuff everyday in my research but I hope I get more suggestions and solid info from here.

My original plan was to plug a .308 heavy bull barrel 20' or more with a twist that could handle the heavier loads that I presumed to go that far. As I have read some say yes, others say no due to wabble and so forth. I was turned on to the .260 rem and the 6mm family.

Everything I have read on these seem to be a better choice for hitting a tango that far. Right now I have found barrels and complete uppers with bolts for those rounds. I was wondering if any LR shooter had any advice on these rounds, barrel twist, length and parts I should get for this build.

Some research I have conducted I could get a complete upper and put it on a normal Lower or get a new BCG and re chamber a barrel if need be. Thoughts?

welcome to THR

save yourself a LOT of grief and go to GA Precision and get their GAP10 in 6 Creedmore. Then ask them if they have any of the HDMR scopes left at the group buy price. Together, should be right at your budget.

I would be looking at a DPMS LR-260....or LR-308 or any other AR in 308. I think the 260 is superior ballistically at those ranges though.... $1500 = $1500 scope = $3000

if i had that to spend id look into one of specializeddinamics.com 260 rifles. i saw a video of him shooting one silenced at steel to 1300 and conecting every shot. hes a serious shooter. i wouldnt buy a semi auto 308 for it there are better choices if thats gonna be a target gun.

I think someone fed you some manure. I’ve shot a 308 with a 1 in 10 twist using a 168 SMK to 1000 yards. A 175 or 180 gr SMK might have been better. An AR in 223 will push an 80 gr. SMK to 1000 yards. A 1 in 7 twist will do just fine.

6.5 Grendel is the best choice for 1k yard target shooting with the AR platform I have used. My Noveske 21" N6 well do 1K but is effected by wind more than the Grendel.

I'd look at the Les Baer sniper/match in .308. Shotgun news had an article a while back with some very impressive claims and the weapons comes with a 1/2 moa guarantee.

I'd be looking at 260 Remington DMPS AR10 FTW. Better long range ballistics than a 308.

With a 308, you'd like to have a 24" barrel for the extra velocity. 20" is borderline. The 308 with a hot, high BC, round out of a long enough barrel can get there, but a 260 would be better.

A 20" 5.56 falls subsonic well before 1000y, for most loads.

Alternatively, you could look into a 6mm AR15. That might be my next long range upper.

I would second looking for one in .260 Rem. It is a great cartridge for that distance. At 1000 yards, it is better than the .308 in every way.

Seems to me that I could use the .260 rem or the 6mm family and still achieve my goals of LR shooting. I thank all for their advice and replies..don't worry 308 will be the next build...I will be hand loading all my rounds once I get the equipment and stuff if there is anything else to pass on so ican right them down please do it.

Ok I'm a little flustered I can't seem to find to much information on the .260 AR stuff on the net..I found more on 6mmBR then the .260. Help?!
