For those of you who use the "old FBI" load is the soft hollow point deformed easily in a speed loader.I useually pocket carry my speed-loader in the same pocket with my 442 in a uncle mikes pocket holster.I have been using 125+p speer golddots, but have been concidering switching to the 158 remmi FBI load.

I don't carry the exposed lead loads in my pocket without a pocket holster. Not out of concern for smushing the hollowpoint, but out of concern for lead rubbing onto the fabric of my pockets. I don't want to get exposed to any more lead than I already do.

Have two speedloaders in a UM pouch for a while now, no real deformation. Keep the tops from crushing down, and all is well. A stiff leather pouch would be best, to keep the loader from being pressed down on the HPs.

Hello. Below is a picture of Remington 158-gr. LSWCHP +P rounds. On the left is a speedloader containing 5 rounds carried for 7 months in a pocket, but with other items like keys. On the right are new rounds.
I normally do not carry these type rounds to this point of deformation. Instead, I shoot them as "range ammo" before they get this far deformed.

My practice is to have the revolver loaded with the LSWCHP+P's, but the speedloader loaded with a jacketed HP+P. The reason I do that is not because of deformation of the lead bullets, but because I find the JHP's are faster to load with. The LSWCHP's with their exposed shoulders can stick on the mouths of the chambers, and the JHP's just drop right in. Just my .02 cents.

M1 has a good point. If you have a solid, steady speedloader(not an HKS) and you are 100% spot on, you can feed empty cases into the revolver. But them is big ifs. Even semi-jacketed hollowpoints don't feed well. They are round but the lead tends to dent and hang up.

I use Safariland Comp II's with my Taurus M85 and they always involve a bit of "play" to align the rounds before I can "push"them into the chamber (not so with using the same S/L with my SP 101 - rounds align/load in a split second).
Every second in an ...ahem....social situation could be life and death (although hopefully I'm reloading behind cover) and I wonder like my motor skills would be like in a real life SD situation, fiddling with the S/L to line the rounds up.
I think I just might try a JHP round in my speeloaders, although I kinda like the Remington Golden Sabre +P 125 gr flavour.

The deformation and bullet shape vs. feeding issues have been covered, so I will just offer the additional suggestion of possibly using the LHPs as the "in-gun" load and carrying the JHPs as the reload.

As I 'test' my 642 fairly often - and cycle through my two HKS #36's with Remi R38S12 +P 158gr LHPSWC, like my 642 is always loaded with. I pocket carry one speedloader, with the other in the center/door pocket of my Jeep. Rotating and periodic 'performance' tests keep the carry ammo 'fresh'. I feel it is better to carry and shoot what you are accustomed to, and when I can't afford the Remi's, like now, I practice with the GA Arms G38E's, a 158gr LSWC +P that actually is a HP. It barks and bites similar to the Remi's... but at a fraction of the cost - and it is easier to find - mail order!

Why are you carrying DoubleTap ammo with a Speer bullet? Speer's Gold Dot Short Barrel round is a better choice in a snub nose IMO. Even though the DoubleTaps have a little higher velocity than the normal Speer rounds the short barrel rounds perform better in a short barrel. The bullet is designed to expand better at the lower velocities you get from a short barrel. I'm talking about their 135 gr bullet which was newly designed by Speer for the NYPD. Just something to think about...

I thought the only low velocity expanding .38 bullet from Speer are their 135 gr bullet. I went to their bullet site and found they have a 110 gr and 135 gr short barrel bullet. The 125 gr bullet doesn't expand as well as the short barrel bullet. I know what DoubleTap is saying on their site but the Speer site doesn't back that up. http://www.speer-bullets.com/ballistics/bullets.aspx You can't argue with the price, that's for sure. Before I started reloading I was buying 180 gr .357 Magnum rounds for woods carry from DoubleTap instead of Buffalo Bore because the price for 50 from DT was the same as 20 from BB.
not sure whats going on, the bullet speer lists in your link is the .357 bullet with a small cavity used in they're full house mags.the bullet doubletap uses has a large cavity like the 135 SB bullet.I have chronoed them and at 200 fps faster than speer's SB load, they open up beautifully.and they do this at 15 yards weak hand http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=56032&d=1175724591

In all probability, you will have taken cover and whomever you are shooting at and who is also shooing at you has taken cover behind something by then. You will be shooting through their cover whether that be a car door, a wall, a counter, brush, heavy store glass, groceries, they will be behind something after you let go that first cylinder worth of ammo. Think about scenarios where you might find yourself in a situation where you have got to the point where you are on your second set of ammo. You are behind cover and your adversaries are behind cover as well.
