I generally lube the entire length of the crane
with a thin thin coating of rig #1 gun grease.

Is this the "proper" way to do it?

I used to use grease all the time, but I found the grease would collect powder residue really bad. I found just a little Breakfree LP does an outstanding job, and doesn't collect crud like grease.

Any good gun oil will do the job but ...... less is more!! I always suggest, put a drop or two of oil on a screwdriver (small) and let that bleed into cylinder rotation point .... and onto extractor rod ... plus same on crane pivot point.... just hold that small screwdriver with oil onto area that you want oiled.... it will creep into the zone over time.

The ''internals'' - action .... leave that be ... no bathing of that area with whole globs of lube .... every year or two - perhaps - a side-plate removal and judicious lube can be useful - but remember - lube will always attract crud.
