Luger jams shut?

Hey guys,

I'm tinkering with a Luger and notice when I put dummy rounds through it, every once and a while, probably once or twice in a mag, the bolt jams shut. I need to take a rubber hammer to it to open it back up. Any idea what this may be?

I have not shot this pistol, I had to replace the firing pin. I cleaned the chamber and the gun looks like it is in great condition.

I'm stumped, once again.

Oversize dummy rounds?

With the bolt locked open.
Try dropping one that sticks in the chamber and see if it fits

Thanks rc, I gave that a go and they all seem to be running fine now. Maybe it just hasn't been cycled in a long time? One other thing is that the rounds occasionally jam up with the nose of the bullet right under the extractor groove.

I wish I was more familiar with these neat pistols but I never had the opportunity to play with them before.

What kind of ammo / bullet shape are you trying to use?

The original German load used a 124 grain FMJ bullet.
At first, a truncated cone shape, then later a round nose.

They should be approximately 1.160" long OAL.

Shorter JHP or flat point ammo very likely will not feed.

I'm using the caps from A- Zoom, they're reading about 1.108" in OAL. FMJ round nose. Is the Luger just tricky to simulate running dummy rounds through it, and may work when live firing?

ANY automatic can be deceptive when manually cycled.
And snap caps are not the same as dummy rounds, either.

Shoot the gun and call back in the morning.

Yes, my mistake, they are snap caps, not dummy rounds. I always flop those two around. :uhoh:
