Rosemead. Never heard of it have you?
Howdy! Just finished my LVL I shotgun class at West Coast Tactical and figured I would give a little review. As usual the class was broken down in two eight hour classes on corresponding Sundays. We actually finished a week ago I just havent had a chance to post something. The class begins in the class room, with review of the manipulation of the shot gun round selection and carrry techniques. Right off the bat they showed me a way to unload my shotgun that I didnt even know existed. My simple mind was very impressed by that. We then went into American carry vs African carry. Ammunition selection then loading and the such. After the class room we moved to the range patterened our shot guns and then worked on drills. Two things that hit me right off the bat. Last time I fired my shot gun I shot about a box of ammo and the next day had a gigantic bruise on my shoulder. I have huned dove since I was a kid and thought I knew how to fire a shotgun. With Fred John and Dale all watching my technique and correcting me I had no bruises after about 100rd count that night. I was quite happy with that. The second thing was my choice of shotgun. I was the only one in the class with a Mossberg. THere were 3 Benelli's and the remainder 870's ( I take that back there may have been one other 590 in class). I am beginning to rethink my weapon choice as I am planning to upgrade from my 500 anyway. We left that night quite sore and very content with my class experience. Ready for that next week. The 2nd Sunday started off with the same class room time. The 1st Sunday they didnt cover the mindset as most of us had attended LVL I pistol. Fred did an over view of the materiel for a couple of new students to the school. We then went over the material from the 1st class then moved on to malfunctions. From there we moved out to the range and did a little work with slugs. Right off the bat I freaking wrapped my thumb over the stock blasted off a 3" slug and had to check to see if I was bleeding. That was the 1st and last time I did that. We worked on slugs for a bit did some CQB drills then came the fun part the Rolling Thunder Drills. I had a blast with this class. I didnt do as well as I would have thought being the shotgun hunter that I was but I still had a great time and genuinly learned quite a bit. Once again the instruction was world class and the whole experience was pleasent. Maybe I have just been lucky but I have yet to have a poor experience with the instructors or the other students in the class. I obviously highly recommend West Coast Tactical as a school. One note I did get to meet another High Roader in Sawdust. Very cool dude and a decent hand at the shotgun. Bellow is the website addy for the school stop on by and see what its all about.

I too have taken West Coast Tactical's Level1 Shotgun course.

There were at least two other HighRoaders in attendance during my training. The three of us hailed from the same place. Our class picture is up on WCT's website. We're 3 out of the 4 asians.

Great course! Great instructors!

Jim

BTW, rolling thunder is a BLAST! Who won king-of-the-hill?

Hey Wilhelm,

Thanks for the kind comments; I enjoyed meeting you, too.

It was a great class; I'm still trying to absorb all that I was taught. Notice I didn't say "learn", as I still need alot of practice (especially speeding-up select-a-slug).

If the range was closer to me, I would definitely be partaking in the Monday night training sessions...oh well. I'll be down there in late September for the Level I Handgun course (which I know you've been through).

Take care...

Friends,

Thank you for the kind words and it was great to work with you good folks.

Sawdust,

You did a great job and showed significant improvement during the course. It was great meeting you.

Wilhelm,

Again, thanks for taking the time to post the review. Working with a switched on shooter like yourself makes our job a lot easier.

Duke,

I hope our paths cross again.

Take care.
