I'm looking for a cheaper place to buy a .50 cal percussion Trade Rifle barrel instead of from Lyman. Anyone know a good place so I can send a link to SWMBO?

I'm wanting to bore a .50 cal into a 28 ga and may even have screw in chokes installed. I figure I can find one for about $200.

However I do also want a nice shallow groove barrel in .40/.45/.50 for longer range shooting. Figured I'd likely top it with a Malcolm style scope.

rodwa, Rice barrels are not inexpensive ML rifle barrels. I have been a BP rifle shooter for years. The Rice round cut barrels are a pleasure to shoot.

Didn't realize they were that reasonably priced. Seems it would be cheaper to buy a Rice barrel and attach a tennon instead of having a Lyman barrel bored out, except that it would be .540" and not .550".

rodwa, Now you have just hit my on switch. I have an ongoing affection for the metallic cartridge Sharps Gemmer rifle. By all means with the Malcolm scope and heavy duty mounts. My favorite hunting rifle is the Sharps .45-110-500. It is fun on the 600 yard gongs. It is sighted on at 300 yds. It will drop an elk or moose like the end of the world. IMG_0461.JPG

Thanks so much fellas. In the past 10 years this has become my primary hunting rifle. My modern rifles are feeling neglected. These rifles from our past are very amazing. They are accurate powerful firearms.
My load is 100/2F Ctg Grade Goex. I use Puff Lon under the 500 grs. Lyman Postell cast 40-1 lead to tin. The Puff Lon increases breech pressures by 10%. It lubes the dry bore at these high altitudes as well. This rifle has a tapered bore with a gain twist. :)
