I got a die in with some others and really don`t know how to use it or what is for. It says Lyman EXP DIE M-2 on it and 30R on the top of the adjusting screw. Is it for .308 or 300 win mag? and what do you use it for?
Sounds like you have a 30 cal Lyman "M" die. It's added to a 2-die bottleneck set and expands the case neck for seating cast bullets. If you don't use it the case mouth shaves lead off the bullet, ruining the accuracy. They're sized by caliber and case length and aren't caliber specific.
I use a medium .35 cal "M" die and shoot cast pistol bullets in my .357 Herrett Contender.
Doesn't the Lyman M die function similar to the expanding collar in the die Lee has called the "powder through"?
I charge powder off the press, but I have one of those Lee dies.
I noticed after looking it over I could set it for just the right fit to seat cast bullets without the least bit of shaving.
Made for cast, but can be used for j. The case mouth is just made larger than normal. A chamfer is used for J. Plus the FL die already expanded the case mouth using most dies.
A powder thru die does NOT expand the mouth the small extra amount like an "M" die.
I just used my Lyman "M" die for the first time yesterday (for my .30-30 Win using Saeco # 316 150gr FNGC) and it worked as advertized. The gas check just slipped into the case mouth with very little pressure and I did not notice any lead shaved from the bullets.
The .30-30 Win uses the "Short body" M die while the .30-06 uses the standard body. I believe the expander assembly is the same (30R)
