More details please...

What powder are you measuring and what charge weight are you trying to get? How bad is bad? My Lyman 55 does pretty well with just about every powder I use. The first thing I'd suggest (not knowing the particulars of your problem) is to get as close as you can to the desired charge weight with the large charge bar and make fine adjustments with the small one. That way you cut powder over a lot less area.

X2 Sport45, Make sure small charge bars don't overhang larger ones, creating a void. Use the tapper on both up and down stroke, uniformly. Settle powder when you fill reservoir(dump first 5 or 10 charges). I use lyman measure for pistol powders and ball powders, don't like it with IMR. Should be very accurate.

I"m having the same problem ,with pistol powders.
can the large bar be used for small dumps of Bullseye? we've been using the small bar,but variances of nearly a helf grain, even using the tapper.
didn't mean to hijack the thread, but we also need help with our 55 measure.
thanks

I use three of them.

The secret, if there is one, is to get the large drum adjustment as close as possible to the desired weight for stick rifle powder.
The less gap you have, the less cutting action.

For very light charges of pistol powder, close the drum gap completely and use the fine slider adjustment.

And always use the little hammer on every up & down stroke of the handle.

I have also made aluminum powder baffles for mine to keep the reservoir powder weight off the drum from changing as you run low on powder.

Used properly, I have never found any other brand powder measure I have tried to be any better.

Lyman 55 Is A Great Little Machine

The Lyman 55 is a beautiful machine. When I first tried it I thought it was nicely made but worthless. Then I called Lyman and they told me to shut down the large drum cylinder completely and use the small slider only. It has worked very well ever since for Bullseye in all my pistol loads. I have since purchased the optional interior baffle from Midway and it is even more accurate now.
