Lyman Universal Trimmer

I have had this Lyman for around 4 yrs now & it does a very good job of trimming cases . I used the Lee trimmers for a long time untill i got this tool, the Lyman Universal comes with nine pilots you can trim cases from 22-458 with this tool.The Lyman Universal has Lyman's Unversal Chuckhead that eliminates the need for those costly collets . As i stated above i used the Lee trimmers for years i have developed carpal tunnel in my wrists & cranking became much more painful for me to do so i bought the Lyman Power Adapter & its a painfree way to get my cases trimmed . You can buy other size pilots for just about any caliber you have all in all The Lyman Universal Trimmer is a good investment in producing any amount of cases you have from 10-100 or more The Lyman Universal can do it . Trapper: I bought a Lyman Universal trimmer so 30 years ago and it's still going strong and have never had a problem with it outside of wearing out trimmer heads. On my 3rd or 4th trimmer head and next time I will be buying the carbide head.

I have a Lyman power trimmer about 36 years old---it still runs good.
It has a little wobble in the trimmer--but--after all this time I guess something is expected. I have had a couple new cutting heads but no other trouble.

I take it you attach a drill to the stub on the left of the picture? Or is there a motor on the right?

What can I say, I don't reload anything that needs case trimming so am new to these trimming machine - lol

I must have got a lemon. I had issues with a bad cutter head right out of the box and Lyman's customer service was piss poor. Now after less than 800 cases the shell holder clamp is slipping. Wish I had gone RCBS.

My experience is like that posted by F_L about the shell holder.

Since I process a whole bunch more 223 than any other necked rifle shell, I modified my Lyman as shown in the image attached. The change is to eliminate the Lyman shell holder (the weak link) with a Lee part. The Lee holder was secured using JBWeld. Since the modification, this is a fine trimmer dedicated to 223's.

The one trimmer I have had zero issues with is the Forster Original trimmer.

I'm the third owner of this unit. Still holds within .001".

Mount it to a board and it's even better !!

I had one of those Forster Originals when i first started out reloading it was a good trimmer cant remember did it use seperate collets for each caliber?

No. the Forster has a shell holder that accepts the same sizes that the Lyman will, but using a different method. The attached image is the Forster shell holder/collet.

The jaws are closed down on the shell base by turning a T handle.
