Who makes good M-1 carbines? Where can I find them? I am not so interested in an M-1 carbine from the period as I am one that is a good shooter. Thank you.

The best M-1 Carbines are the USGI ones.

If it's made by the following, then it's USGI:
Inland Division
Winchester
Irwin-Pederson
Saginaw
Underwood
National Postal Meter
Quality Hardware
International Business Machines
Standard Products
Rock-Ola
Commerical Controls

The majority of the commerical made M-1 Carbines are less reliable than the USGI M-1 Carbines. Auto-Ordnance (Khar Arms) is the only commerical manufacturer still making M-1 Carbines.

You can get a USGI M-1 Carbine for about $500-1500 depending on condition.
You can get a brand new Auto-Ordnance (Khar Arms) M-1 Carbine for about $800-1000 depending on configuration.
You can get a used Universal M-1 Carbine for about $400, but you may spend more time trying to fix it than shooting it.

Maybe things at Auto Ordnance have changed since I bought a brand-new Carbine in late '07 from Guns And Ammo, in Memphis.
It was my first gun purchase. So far it's the only mistake on a gun acquisition.
The gun was treated with care, never dropped, hit etc.

Somehow the bolt got out of the track when shooting, after a total of about 120 rds. in two months and was jammed solid:(.
The gun smith would not touch it, and the factory made a free repair.

I then realized that had I done any reading beforehand:eek:, my money would have been much better spent on a used Mini 14 or 30, or an SKS. I bought all three in early '08 and sold the Carbine at a big loss.
